2.  Term 4 Conclusion

We have now reached the final week of the 2020 school year which we hope has been a successful year for you and your child! End of year reports were emailed home today – please email our Deputy Principal, Karen Rodger krodger@sunnybrae.school.nz if you did not receive one.

Students will visit their 2021 class and meet their teacher on Monday 14 December. Each child will bring home a stationery list and we would appreciate it if all students could return with these items on the first day back, Thursday 4 February 2021.

Term 4 ends this Monday 14 December at 12:30 pm. Please ensure that your child/ren are picked up at that time (unless prior arrangements have been made with YMCA) as no supervision will be provided by Sunnybrae staff after that time. Please note: Monday is a mufti day and students do not have to wear their uniform.

Farewell to our 75 Year 6 students who will be going on to Intermediate School in 2021 and 10 students who are transferring to other schools. We wish them success at their new schools.

We also farewell four of our staff members Leanne Barlow, Olivia Jones, Monique Jansen (Maternity Leave) and Marie Mitchell. They will be missed but we wish them success for their next endeavours.

Resources:  If you still have any resources, e.g. journals, library books, other readers, sports uniforms, we would appreciate receiving them back on Monday please.

Merry Christmas from the Sunnybrae Staff:  The Sunnybrae staff hope that you all have a very Merry Christmas. Happy New Year to everyone and we are wishing you a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday. See you in 2021.

3.  Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) 2020

The Year 5 & 6 Core GATE groups have been involved in a community-based problem-solving programme where they were tasked with identifying an issue or problem within our school community, come up with a solution and then implement this solution.

Year 6 Group 1 chose to revamp the student’s PE borrowing shed, painting the walls, updating the gear available to borrow and repairing the storage-trolley with new wheels and elastic sides. Students are now enjoying the fruits of their labour.

Year 6 Group 2 chose to clear out the old girls shower room in the pool area. This involved removing an old rusty hot-water cylinder, painting the walls and building a wooden plinth to cover the old shower tray so that Mr Pretorius can use the room for pool-cleaning gear storage.

Mr Pretorius asked them to design and paint a fabulous pattern on to the front of the climbing frame in the Senior playground which definitely brightened it up!

Year 5 Group 1 chose to organise the very messy swimming equipment storage shed which was once the boys shower in the pool area. They cleaned and painted the room, built a wooden plinth to cover the old shower tray, organised a big storage shelf for the boards and diving rings and barrels for noodle storage as well as hooks for hoops and the lane rope. They then organised for Mr Pretorius to rehang the door as a sliding door.

Year 5 Group 2 chose to find a solution to the very muddy gateway into the bush area. They decided on grass pavers which were laid at the Working Bee in October. They then built a new path to join up with the existing path in the bush.

Year 6 GATE Maths was based on the Otago Problem-Solving Challenge which is a series of problem-solving challenges

Year 5 GATE Maths focussed on teaching students problem-solving strategies which they then practised using independently.

4.   Sports Prizegiving

On Monday 7 December, we hosted the Sunnybrae Sports Prizegiving where our teams were acknowledged. Sheryle and Mary, our Sunnybrae PE and Sports leaders would like to take this opportunity to formally thank the teachers for all their help with organising and supporting teams. To our wonderful parents who have given up their time in order to coach and or manage team/s, we are very thankful for your support as well! A special thank you must also go to Karen Simpson for taking all the sports team photos and to Kat Bambury for designing our awesome new sports certificates!

5.   Flippa Ball

This year we had the wonderful Beth Railton, Leanne Barlow and Becs Reti coach and co-manage our Flippa Ball team. The team, consisting of Year 4’s through to Year 6’s, were Olivia Togia Dove, Sophia Railton, Chloe Everett, Breanna Reti, Hiroto Maruyama and Charlotte Barlow. To make up numbers, when ours were down, we were supported by Torbay Primary School. Last Sunday, it was a great final game for the Sunnybrae Sharks, coming up against a team they drew with earlier in the competition. The team worked well together with fantastic passing through the pool and strong defence to come away with a 6-0 win! Well done team!

6.  Learner Qualities

We are proud to share with you our new Learner Qualities. This unique set of future focused competencies has been developed by teachers and students over 2020. These qualities are deemed essential for our 21st century learners and are based around the New Zealand Key Competencies and current research from Harvard University. Our goal is for all members of our Sunnybrae family to understand and talk about the Learner Qualities so that they become a part of who we are. During 2021, we will be focusing on supporting students in developing these special skills and attitudes.

Our current Student Council has been contributing to the design of our visual representations for the Learner Qualities and these will be displayed around our school next year.

7.  PB4L

This week our PB4L focus has continued to be on showing respect, co-operation and excellence during assemblies.
