1.  Welcome to Sunnybrae

This week we would like to welcome the following new students and their families to our school community: Nathan Zhao (Room 3) and Jiarui (Daniel) Liu (Room 13).

2.  New Board of Trustee Chairperson

At the March Board meeting, the Board of Trustees elected a new Chair, James McIntyre following the resignation of Steve Simpson. James McIntrye, a current member of the Board of Trustees, has accepted this postion. James currently has two children at Sunnybrae Normal School and has had three children who have moved onto Intermediate and High School who have attended Sunnybrae previously. Please join us in congratulating James on his new role.

The Board of Trustees would like to express their appreciation and thanks to Steve Simpson, former Chair for his leadership over the last two years and for all his hard work on behalf of our school community. Steve will remain on the Board of Trustees and continue to support the community.

3.  Easter Holiday – School Closed

A reminder that school will be closed on Friday 2 April, Monday 5 April and Tuesday 6 April 2021 for the Easter Holiday and reopen again on Wednesday 7 April 2021.

4.  Cycle Road Safety Training Reminder – Y5/6

Cycling Road Safety Training

 Year 5 & 6 Students

Monday 29th March  – Thursday 1st April 2021

Constable Steve Harwood will be offering Cycling Road Safety Training to our Year 5 & 6 students. He will be teaching road safety skills when riding a bike on footpaths and roads. This is very valuable training if your child is already riding their bike around the neighbourhood, and good preparation for them if they will be cycling to Intermediate next year.

To participate in this training your child must:

-have a safe bike with working brakes

-a helmet that fits them correctly

-already be confident and competent at riding a bike

-must have a red rear reflector attached to their bike to be used on the road

As part of the training, he will take small groups of approximately six students out onto the footpaths and roads behind our school and around the suburb of Hillcrest.

If you would like your child to participate in this training, please email Melanie Hanson: mhanson@sunnybrae.school.nz

by Friday 26th March 2021

Constable Harwood may get called out on other Police work, therefore, our timetable needs to remain flexible. It is important that your child comes to school with their bike and helmet each day so that they are available to complete their training on any of the following days:  Monday 29th March  – Thursday 1st April 2021

5.  Travelwise Crossing Promotion

Thank you to the following Year 5 students who participated in a ‘Travelwise Taster’ on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at our Sunnybrae Rd crossing this week.

John Lee, Maia Geiger, Mike Yang, Emma Ma, Chloe Everett, Sarah Liu,  Leonie Mackenzie, Sanna Alexander, Lachlan Raybould, Taika Zhang, Annzu Suetake, Jamie Pan and Milo Wibowo.

6.  Successful Scooter Training

A big thank you to Constable Steve Harwood who ran scooter training with our students this week. They absolutely loved the experience and had a wonderful time. This year we had a total of 101 students participate.

If your child does ride their scooter to school, please ensure that they are always wearing a helmet.

7.  Music and Cultural Groups 2021

9.  Junior Netball 2021

Mother Earth Future Ferns Netball

Teams will play on a Monday afternoon at Netball North Harbour, 44 Northcote Road, Takapuna.

Year 1-2: The competition begins on Monday 17th May and the last game is on Monday 16th August and runs for 10 weeks in Terms 2 and 3. Games will be played indoors between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm.

Year 3: The competition begins on Monday 10th May and the last game is on Monday 16th August and runs for 12 weeks in Terms 2 and 3. Games will be played outdoors starting at either 4:00 pm or 4:50 pm.

Fees are approximately $77

If your child is able to play, please confirm their place by emailing Megan Ebborn at mebborn@sunnybrae.school.nz.

Each team will require a coach to conduct a weekly practice, as well as a manager, who will organise the team for all games. Parents are required to attend and help with the scoring of games. We require coaches and managers in order to enter teams. Please email Megan Ebborn if you are able to help.

10. Senior Netball 2021

Senior netball games will be played on Saturday from early to late morning at Westlake Girls (Junior Netties) commencing on Saturday 8 May and finishing on Saturday 26 August. If your son or daughter would like to represent Sunnybrae, and has not received a permission slip, please have them see Ms Snellaert in Room 17 to collect a notice. These permission slips need to be returned to Ms Snellaert by Friday 26 March.

If we have to cancel games due to Covid, we will not be playing make up games. If we go into a large scale lockdown, dates and days of competitions may be changed or cancelled. Save-a-days are due to weather cancellations only.

If your child played netball in 2020, they are required to login in from the main menu of ‘Netball North Harbour’ and ‘update’ their details; go to member login.

If your child has never played Netball, they are required to register online at ‘Netball North Harbour’ from the main menu, left hand side where it states: New member registration. You will need to sit with them to assist with their registration.

Fees will be payable once teams have been finalised and will be approximately $85 per child. This cost also includes the supply of an umpire for your child’s team.

Each team requires a coach (to conduct a weekly practice) and a manager (to organise the team at games). Parents are asked to assist with coaching and managing. We are unable to enter teams without parent support.

11.  Flippa Ball

Flippa Ball is a simplified version of Water Polo and is offered to our Year 4, 5 and 6 students. The pool is shallow (approximately 1.3m) allowing players to stand on the bottom of the pool. The players are permitted to walk along the bottom of the pool if they do not have the ball. If in possession of the ball they must swim with the ball or pass the ball with one hand to another player. The game consists of two halves of 10 minutes duration and players are ‘subbed’ on throughout the game. Your child must be a strong swimmer to play this game.

Competition Dates: Term 2, Sunday 9th May – Sunday 4th July (No training on Queen’s Birthday)

Venue: AUT Millennium, Antares Place, Mairangi Bay

Day and Time: Sunday – played anytime between 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm (depending on which grade they are in).

If your child would like to compete and represent Sunnybrae Normal School, and it works with your family commitments, please have them collect a permission slip from Ms Snellaert, Room 17. Thank you to those students who have already signed up.

Please note that once we receive a permission slip, your child will be registered as a player in that team and are making a commitment to play for the duration of Term 2.
