5. Year 4 – 6 Cross Country Training

REMINDER

Our Annual Year 4-6 Cross Country will take place on Thursday 9 September. Training will begin on Tuesday 3 August.

Training will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

Please ensure your child is prepared on these days.

They will need to have suitable shoes to run in as well as their SNS PE shirt (if they have one) to change into before running.

Any necessary medication e.g. asthma inhalers will also need to be at school. Students will be responsible for carrying these when they run.

If you require any further information, please contact your child’s teacher or email Mary Waters mwaters@sunnybrae.school.nz.

6. IRIS Recording Tool for Student Teachers

The University of Auckland has introduced a new tool called IRIS which will allow student teachers to reflect on their own teaching. This term we have student teachers at Sunnybrae who will be using this tool for the first time.

What is IRIS?

Student teachers will record themselves using a state of the art system designed for initial teacher education and annotate the videos, noticing key aspects of their emerging teaching practice. Together with their University of Auckland Supervisor and Sunnybrae teacher mentor, the student teachers will use the annotated videos as the basis for a rich conversation about the learning that has occurred.

Why use IRIS?

This approach is used widely in the UK and other countries. Evidence shows a significant improvement in the quality of teacher practice. The University of Auckland is the first university in New Zealand to explore using this technology.

Security?

Student teachers have a personal, password-protected account for IRIS Connect and videos are uploaded to a secure cloud-based platform where they can only be accessed by those who have been granted permission. Video recordings can be anonymised to further protect students and staff.

7.  Sunnybrae Cultural Project

This week our Community Engagement team worked with our Japanese and Filipino families. It is a privilege to listen to each family sharing their stories and images that represent their culture. These will be used to create a series of panels at the front entrance of the school that represents all of the different cultures of the people within our school community. Next Wednesday at 5:00 pm we will meet with our Latin/American families. Each cultural group that makes up our school will receive an email invitation to a meeting during Term 3.  We look forward to sharing stories with you.

8.  Lucky Book Club – Scholastic Orders

Issue 5 Lucky Book Club brochures were sent home this week.

Please place your orders online at https://www.scholastic.co.nz/parents/lucky-book-club/.

The office will not be taking any cash orders.

Orders close Friday 13 August.

9.  Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

This week our PB4L focus has been on using respect in the library.

Our lessons have focussed on:

  • Using an inside voice.
  • Reading quietly.

10.  The Resilience Project: Sleep

Martin Heppell from The Resilience Project has created a short clip about the importance of sleep. To view this clip please Click Here.

For more information on sleep and device management please click through to view the latest blog “Reclaiming Control of Your Electronic Devices”.

11. STEAM ED Partnership with Local Industry

Can You Help?

Can you Help? The recent Drawing the Future Report, investigating the career aspirations of New Zealand children and young adults, showed concerning results in terms of the lack of children who see STEAM industries as a career pathway. The Pupuke Kāhui Ako are encouraging our parent community to help us address skill shortage locally and nationally in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, The Arts and Mathematics) sector and is organising a community event in Term 3. Please see the flyer at the bottom of the newsletter for further details and fill in this form if you are interested in being involved.

12. National Scout Scarf Day – Monday 2nd August

On Monday 2nd August, the Scouting movement are celebrating World Scout Scarf Day and are encouraging their members to wear their scarves to school or work for the day. As a school we welcome and encourage past and current members of Scouts to wear their scarf to school on Monday 2nd August. This is one of the ways Scouts Aotearoa raises awareness about the unique opportunities Scouting offers youth and adults alike. Scouts Aotearoa is a growing and vibrant Movement offering adventure and skills-based learning for anyone aged 5-26.
