Community Notices

Welcome to Sunnybrae
This week we would like to welcome the following new student and their family to our school community: Greyson in Room 2

The PB4L focus for Term 4 Week 1 will be on using excellence everywhere. Our lessons will focus on Playing safely and keeping hands and feet to ourselves.

Science in a Van Show
On Wednesday the team from Science in a Van came to share their programme “What’s the Matter?” with our Year 4/5 students.
Emily and Allen were very impressed with the knowledge and understanding our students possessed. They shared their knowledge and performed some fun experiments for us. In the show they discussed:

What is a material? What are the properties of a material? How our senses are important. Recap of the States of Matter – (using volunteers we have a States of Matter disco). Periodic Table Introduction – The Cupboard of the Universe!
How atoms come together to make molecules. How you can change materials by
Temperature – Can Crush experiment. Mixing – We do the classic vinegar and baking soda experiment but explore what happens to the atoms that make up the vinegar molecule/baking soda molecule. Pressure. Super Absorbent Polymer experiment
PH Tester Experiment (red cabbage tea).

Sleep
Now, more than ever, it is so important to ensure that students and adults are receiving adequate levels of sleep each night.

It is becoming increasingly common for our older students to have phones. This is a great way for them to stay connected to their friends and family, but can also become addictive. It is not unusual for students, even as young as primary school, to be interrupted by phone messages during the night when they should be asleep.

  • Ensure regular bedtime routines
  • Turn off all devices an hour before bed
  • Set up the ‘do not disturb’ function on phones
  • Have a single place in the house where all devices (iPads, phones, laptops) are charged at night so they are not left in bedrooms

Proud Moment
Well done to Francesca, from Room 19, who proudly walked out with the English Roses last Saturday night. Frankie was picked to be be the mascot for England at the final of the Women’s Rugby World Cup – Black Ferns vs England’s Red Roses – in front of 42,000 fans at a sold-out Eden Park. Well done the mighty Black Ferns, it was an amazing experience for everyone there!

SPORTS UPDATE:

Year 5 & 6 Gymnastics
We are finally in some natural rhythm for competitive sports to become a norm. It delights me to congratulate our following gymnastics who practised extremely hard a couple of weeks at the end of Term 3, during the holidays, and worked hard in the weeks leading up to their competition.

Congratulations to:  Sanna, Leonie, Isla, Emilie, Tamaku, Taylor, Lamar, Sorsha, Felcity, Carly, Emily, Hayley, Eden, Summer, Alya, Kaia and Iris.

A special mention is given to Louise Fitzgerald for her support and a particular appreciation is extended to Ava Fitzgerald. Her amazing and professional tutoring allowed the girls to have polished routines. Thank you Ava! A big thank you also is extended to the two parents who helped on the practise and competition days: Kylie Karaitiana and Hannah Williamson. Great work supporters, parents and team!!

Year 4-6 Athletics
On Tuesday 15 November we held our annual Year 4 to 6 Athletics Day (Finals results below). We were very lucky to have perfect weather so all children could participate in a variety of fun activities and/or sprint and field event finals. Thank you to all the staff who helped leading up to and on the day, and to all whanau who came along to support.

Police vetting of anyone over 18 in the home will be required. A homestay learner is a great chance to share different cultures and widen your child’s worldview. Any families interesting in hosting the visitors, please contact Sophia Yang on
Enrolments
Enrolments at Sunnybrae Normal School
If you live ‘in zone’ and have a child turning 5 this year, please make sure you enrol your child/children as soon as possible. Please also encourage any new ‘in zone’ families to enrol their children as this helps us with future planning. Please visit our website www.sunnybrae.school.nz and complete the enrolment form.
If you are moving away from Sunnybrae, please contact the office as soon as possible.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:  Lockdown Drill
As part of our ongoing monitoring of our Emergency Procedures we will be having a indoor lockdown drill. This is when students will be inside when the lockdown drill is announced in the morning of Monday 21 November

PTA UPDATE:

Our Sausage Sizzle on Wednesday was a huge sucess and with your support the PTA raised over $800. A big thanks to our Sausage Sizzle Crew – Jenny, Jimmy, Monica, Vivian, Nancy and Litong for cooking and sorting hundreds of sausages and to Dora and Justine for organising the event.

SAFETY AROUND SCHOOL:
Parking
We are asking that all parents/caregivers be considerate of our many neighbours by ensuring that you leave their driveways clear when you are dropping off or picking up your child/children. For security, please lock your vehicle at these times.

Packing Boxes Needed
Our library is getting a much needed refresh over the school holidays so we desperately need cardboard boxes to pack away the hundreds of books we have. Please drop off any sturdy cardboard boxes, similiar in size to Hello Fresh/My Food Bag, to the office.

Kind regards
Lorene Hurd,
Principal
SUNNYBRAE NORMAL SCHOOL
