Independence: Everywhere –  Be organised and ready to learn.

Year 5 & 6 Round up of Term 2

Well, we have come to the end of Term 2 and what a busy term it has been for the Year 5/6 Team! We started the term with preparations and headed out for our camp in Week 2 at Carey Park, making special memories for all! Fortunately, the weather also held off for Cluster Sports in Week 4 and students could compete against other schools in our area in a range of sporting codes.

During the term, as part of their integrated inquiry, students explored NZ history by initially reviewing the ANZACs and the ANZAC Day. Following this, students researched and presented other significant events that have shaped NZ History. More recently, we have started to look at Advertising that has included links to home learning.

All curriculum areas have been covered this term and you will notice photos showing students enjoying physical activities, written work and maths problem solving along with examples of visual art projects (some taught by our excellent student teachers).

Get Firewise
The Year 1’s have been learning about fire safety and what to do when there is a fire.
We followed the Get Firewise program from Fire and Emergency New Zealand. We discussed the difference between a safe and an unsafe fire, and we looked at smoke alarms and how to get out of a space safely. Every family should have a conversation around an evacuation plan and a safe meeting place in the case of an emergency.
Part of the program is that the firefighters from the nearest fire station (Takapuna) came to visit the school with the fire engine. Captain Steven and his team were very impressed with our students and how much they knew.

Part 5 of 5
Mana Tangatarua
Children have the skills, knowledge and confidence to navigate, with mental wellness, two or more worlds. They become open to learning different ways of doing things and make decisions using integrity, appreciating other people’s values and needs.

Mana Tangatarua develops when children know:

  • they have something to teach others.
  • everyone else has something to offer and teach them.

Children demonstrate Mana Tangatarua when they:

  • are interested in learning about other cultures and communities.
  • understand and reflect on Māori history, especially the history of their local area.
  • have some ideas about what they would like to do when they leave school.
  • try hard to pronounce people’s names and place names properly.
  • are open to new ideas and doing things differently.
  • make decisions with moral courage and integrity.
  • are mindful of the values and needs of others.

Matariki
Matariki this year falls on the 14th July. At school this week, we have been celebrating Matariki with our Matariki singing assembly and our Matariki themed RICE rewards afternoon.

What is Matariki?
The rise of Matariki in the winter skies above Aotearoa is an important time in the Māori calendar, as it signifies the start of the Māori new year. It is the name for the cluster of stars also known as Pleiades. According to Māori tradition, the god of wind Tāwhimātea, was so angry when his siblings separated their parents, Ranginui the sky father and Papatūānuku the earth mother, that he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens. Traditionally, Matariki was a time to acknowledge the dead and to release their spirits to become stars. It was also a time to reflect, to be thankful to the gods for the harvest, to feast and to share with family and friends.

Flippa Ball Season Final
On Sunday the 25 of June the Sunnybrae Seals were in the final against Forrest Hill Mermaids (they were all real people). It was a very tough loss. The score was 4/5 to them, our goalie was amazing and all the other people that were there to support us and our team. Also a huge thanks to Elliot, David, Ethan, Noah, Conor, Benjamin, Yiyi Helene, Yireh, and our coach Dean Farquhar and manager Nancy Song. By Elliot and Noah.

Crossing Duty Helper Needed
We would like to thank all of the parents who currently help us before or after school with the crossing on Sunnybrae Road.
We are looking for a volunteer to help us on Wednesday afternoons from 2.55 – 3.10 pm. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Jessica Gateman for supporting the school in this way and keeping the students safe. If you would like to help by doing the crossing duty, please let Katrina Bambury know at
office@sunnybrae.school.nz or call 09 443 5058 or stop by the office to say hello. Your help would be appreciated.

Enrolments
In Zone Enrolment
If you live ‘in zone’ and have a child turning 5 this year, please make sure you enrol your child/children as soon as possible. Please also encourage any new ‘in zone’ families to enrol their children as this helps us with future planning. Please visit our website www.sunnybrae.school.nz and complete the enrolment form.
If you are moving away from Sunnybrae, please contact the office as soon as possible.

REMINDER:
After School Pickup

We ask for your assistance in the following ways:

  • Be on-time to collect your child no later than 3.15pm.
  • Please do not take home another student unless you have contacted their parents to obtain permission.
  • If you see a student who is not accompanied by a parent/caregiver just outside of our school grounds and you are concerned, direct the student to return to the school office to wait for their parents to collect them. You may wish to walk the student back to the office. The Office Staff will call the parents.
  • Ensure your child knows what gate they will be picked up from and by whom.
  • Clarify each morning if your child will be attending After School Care or not.
  • If you have booked your child into the YMCA after school care, but you decide to collect your child personally, please let the YMCA know in advance.
  • If there are any changes to pick up plans during the day, please call the office on 443 5058.

It would be most helpful if all students knew at least one parent’s phone number or have the number(s) written down and stored in their school bag in case of these situations. By ensuring that these processes are followed, it makes for a safer and stress free pickup for your child.

Kind regards
Lorene Hurd,
Principal
SUNNYBRAE NORMAL SCHOOL

REMINDER:
Please note that all children are to be collected from school by 3.00 pm. If you are unable to collect before this time, you may be interested in booking your child into the YMCA after-school club held in the hall.
