Ki o Rahi Coaching In Week 1 & 2, our Y5/6 ākonga had a special coaching sessions for the game of Ki-O-Rahi.
Thanks to the new covered turf, students had a blast despite the rainy weather. This unique game was inspired by the Māori legend Rahitutakahina and Tiarakurapakewai. Children had an exciting time playing a game of Ki-O-Rahi as a tribute to te reo and tikanga in celebration of Matariki. The game is similar to rugby, netball, tag rugby and touch. Two teams of eight players spread out on a zoned field, and score points by touching the ‘pou’ (boundary markers) and hitting a ‘tupu’ (centre) or target. Y5/6 ākonga demonstrated great teamwork and enjoyed learning about the game.

Northcote Intermediate Visit This week our Year 6 students were invited to attend Northcote Intermediate to view their 2023 Showcase. There was a bit of excitement because just as we arrived on site, the hail began! The kind Principal, Mr Phil Muir delivered umbrellas to the bus to help us all out. The performance included Kapa haka, dance, drumming and Pasifika groups along with their choir, orchestra and rock band. It was fabulous to see our past pupils involved in many of the performances, including a couple who performed solo acts. Everyone was buzzing and in awe of the Northcote Intermediate Showcase. What a talented group of students!

At Sunnybrae, we have developed a shared understanding with our students and community about Mental Health Education. At Sunnybrae Normal School, we care for our mental health and our sense of wellbeing by actively recognising and encouraging the best in everyone. We can live and show our school what is important to us by using our values, R.I.C.E. (Respect, Independence, Cooperation and Excellence). This allows all of us at Sunnybrae to grow.

Toy Cars Needed The Year 1 teachers are looking for toy cars to use in their classrooms. If you have toy cars that you are happy to donate to us, please drop these off at our Deputy Principal, Helen Rennie-Younger’s office. Thank you for your support.

PTA UPDATE: Matariki Disco Night Congratulations to our PTA on the successful school disco. We raised over $7000 towards purchasing hoops and goals for the covered turf area. It looked like everyone had a fantastic time and enjoyed themselves. School events like discos are a great way to bring the community together, have fun, and create lasting memories. I hope it was a memorable and enjoyable experience for all the students, staff, and parents involved. Special thanks to our parent helpers who signed up to help on the night to assist with decorations, setting up the venue and assisting in selling refreshments and toys: Isabella Aliimatafitafi, Elli Rush and Kristie Barber, Lucy and Deano Farquhar, Lin Bai, Kaya Wong, Prashila Puna, Vaiola Anitoni, Hani Song, Ruth Samau, May Huang, Amanda Seunghee Hur, Laverne Robinson, Monica Ma, Katherine Dace, Cindy Cen and Maddy Robertson, and to everyone who stayed behind to help clean up. This can be done easily via the quick link on our school website http://www.sunnybrae.school.nz, on the school app (Kiwischools Connect) or by phoning the office on (09) 443 5058 to leave a message.
Holidays in term times: Should time away from school be required for reasons other than sickness, and for a duration of more than 3 days, a formal letter of request should be addressed to the Principal, Lorene Hurd. Please forward your dates and a reason that your child will be on leave from school to office@sunnybrae.school.nz.
Appointments: As classes are often outside of the classroom for break times, sports activities or library and assembly sessions, it can take some time to locate students when parents come to the office without notifying us in advance. If your child needs to be absent from school for a period of time during the day, please advise the classroom teacher before 9:00 am on the day of, giving the reason for the absence, the time of departure and the estimated time of return to school. Any student leaving school must be collected from the school office and also be signed out by a parent or guardian. Upon return to school, the student must report back to the office and sign in before returning to class.
