SPORTS UPDATE:
Year 3-6 Cross Country
Our Annual Cross Country Meet was held last Thursday, thankfully, on a beautiful, crisp afternoon.

All of the students in Years 3 – 6 took part, with some Year 5 & 6 students opting to run in the ‘Championship’ race, hoping to secure a place on our Cluster Cross Country team. We needed to make some last-minute changes to the course due to the amount of rain we had over recent weeks, but this didn’t dampen spirits with students participating enthusiastically. Placings were as follows:

Wig Wednesday Fundraiser
On Wednesday the 6th September, Sunnybrae is taking part in Wig Wednesday to raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation.

Taking part is easy. All you have to do is simply wear a wig, style a funky hairdo, wear bright colourful clothes and bring in a Gold Coin. Our support this Wig Wednesday will go a long way in helping Kiwi children with cancer, as well as their whānau during the toughest time of their lives. The following are some examples of what our donations could fund:

To coincide with Wig Wednesday, our Whole School Assembly will be held on Wednesday 6th September, so that we can all come together and celebrate.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES:
Fire Drill
The purpose of Emergency Drills is to ensure all students and staff at Sunnybrae Normal School are safe and that everyone is aware of emergency procedures so they can respond appropriately in the event of an emergency. All students will be informed and prepared for each drill in advance. Classroom teachers will debrief students after each drill. In Week 7 is our Fire Drill. We have already had the following drills this term: Earthquake and Lockdown and we will continue to have Drills in Term 4 and inform you accordingly.

Crossing Duty Helper Needed
We would like to thank all of the parents who currently help us before or after school with the crossing on Sunnybrae Road. It is crucial that we all work together to keep our kids safe.
We are looking for volunteers to help us on Monday afternoons from 2:55 – 3:10 pm and Friday mornings from 8:30 – 8:55 am.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Kate Dorfling and Michele O’Brien for supporting the school in this way and keeping the students safe. If you would like to help by doing the crossing duty, please let Katrina Bambury know at office@sunnybrae.school.nz or call (09) 443 5058 or stop by the office to say hello. Your help would be appreciated. This is a great way to get to know the Sunnybrae families.

Sebastian’s Toy Drive For Starship Hospital
Hi I am Sebastian Subritzky from R
oom 13. I am a Year 3. I am doing a community project and I’m collecting new toys for Starship Hospital.
Starship is a hospital for children in Auckland. I am collecting new toys for children so they can play with them and so they aren’t scared of having an operation. The hospital needs any new toys and they don’t have to be expensive. They have a wish list. I will make boxes where you can drop off the toys. These will be in Room 13. Drop off is available until Friday 15th of September. Please donate. Thank you. Sebastian

Starship Hospital Wish List

After School Pick-ups
There has been an increase in students unable to find their parents/caregivers at the end of the day pick up and parents unable to locate their children.
There were instances of students going home with friends and their family without making previous arrangements. As you can imagine, this is a scary situation for both parents and school staff who are desperately trying to locate the children.

We ask for your assistance in the following ways:

  • Be on-time to collect your child no later than 3.15 pm.
  • Students are not to stay after 3.00 pm playing on playgrounds unless accompanied by a supervising adult.
  • Please do not take home another student unless you have contacted their parents to obtain permission.
  • If you see a student who is not accompanied by a parent/caregiver just outside of our school grounds and you are concerned, direct the student to return to the school office to wait for their parents to collect them. You may wish to walk the student back to the office. The Office Staff will call the parents.
  • Ensure your child knows what gate they will be picked up from and by whom.
  • Clarify each morning if your child will be attending After School Care or not.
  • If you have booked your child into the YMCA after school care, but you decide to collect your child personally, please let the YMCA know in advance.
  • If there are any changes to pick up plans during the day, please call the office on 443 5058.

It would be most helpful if all students knew at least one parent’s phone number or have the number(s) written down and stored in their school bag in case of these situations.

By ensuring that these processes are followed, it makes for a safer and stress free pickup for your child.

Kind regards
Lorene Hurd,
Principal
SUNNYBRAE NORMAL SCHOOL
