ALL TEAMS UPDATE:
Term 3 Activities
Year 1 have been focusing on Fractions this term.
It is really fun to learn about fractions with food. Some of the Year 1’s made pizzas on paper and then tried the real thing in our amazing school kitchen. We have two Student teachers who enjoyed seeing the learning in a different environment. At home, you can have a discussion on how you cut your sandwiches or other food to ensure all the pieces are the same size.

Year 2
As part of the Mitey Mental Health Education, Room 8 ākonga (students) have been learning to identify a range of feelings and understand how feelings can be linked.
In small groups, we created a freeze frame to show a feeling of our choice. Next, we discussed what we were thinking at this time or the way our body was responding to the feeling. Then, we also explored which feelings have a greater effect on the body and which feel stronger than other feelings. Categorising each situation into a small problem, a medium problem and a big problem helped us come up with strategies which we can apply to regulate our emotions too.

Freeze frame actors: Selina, Nieve, Joshua, Jeddah and Xavier

After that, we created a feelings weather chart which gave us the vocabulary and opportunity to discuss how we feel in many different situations. It was a fun and meaningful way of exploring ways to support each other and realise the importance of manaakitanga – respect, care, and concern for others.

Year 3 and 4
Room 14 were lucky enough to partner up with Room 18 to learn about circuits and conductivity as part of our materials unit of  inquiry. Makey Makey kits were used to connect everyday objects to a computer in order to play music. We discovered that bananas and ourselves are conductive!

In Room 16, we have been learning about magnetism as part of our inquiry into materials. We made these cute magnetic buttons. We have learnt that this is a kind of permanent magnetism.

Year 5 and 6
Over Wednesday and Thursday this week, Year 5 and 6 students participated in a ‘Day of Difference’. Year 5 learned about simple circuits and conductivity before making instruments with conductive materials (even bananas) and interactive, coded posters. This was during mini lessons in Digital Technology, using Makey Makey.

For the Year 6, this included participating in a Bike Ready programme provided by Harbour Sport. Year 6 enjoyed building their confidence on bikes, learning new skills and for some, even learning how to ride a bike from scratch. There was a lot of learning that happened over these two days and we are very thankful to Harbour Sport for providing students with such a wonderful opportunity.

CHINESE LANGUAGE WEEK:

On Thursday our Chinese students gathered for a photo together – celebrating how proud they are to be Chinese.

SPORTS UPDATE:
Interschool Cross Country
It was a perfectly sunny day and there was an air of excitement as we gathered at the Harvey Wright Fields for the annual Interschool Cross Country against Willow Park School, Northcote Primary School and St Mary’s Primary School last Thursday morning.
An enthusiastic team of 35 students competed in six different races, showing great
sportsmanship and the Sunnybrae RICE values, persevering over a difficult track.  Well done to all competitors. Congratulations to Ammon from Room 13 for winning the Year 4 Boys event. Awesome job team.

Thank you to all the parents who provided transport and supervision for the morning, we can’t attend events like this without your support.

Staff v Student Netball Game
On Wednesday, the Year 6 netballers bravely took on a team of teachers in a full game.
The weather was fantastically warm, and there was a wonderful turnout of both staff and students to support the players (signs included). Staff had a height advantage on the day, with a close game between both teams. Planning has begun for the next sport that teachers will take on… once their bodies have had time to recover!

Uniform for Term 4
With the sunnier weather coming our way, this is a reminder that in Term 4, all students must wear a Sunnybrae hat when playing outside.
Wearing fewer layers in the classroom is also recommended so that everyone is at a comfortable temperature. Yellow polo shirts with a sweatshirt that can be taken off and shorts or skorts are ideal. Please ensure your child’s hat is clearly named.
