Parent Teacher Conferences & Goal Setting
We are holding our Sunnybrae Parent Teacher Conferences and Goal Setting on Wednesday 28 February from 1:20 – 7:00 pm and Thursday 29 February 3:20 – 6:00 pm.

We hope that all families will attend these meetings so that you can share your insights on how we can best support your child. Teachers are interested in learning about what success looks like for your child, what supports their learning, and any potential barriers to the learning process. Teachers will share how your child has settled into their new class and routines. Parents and teachers will collaboratively set learning goals for your child for the coming term.

Please note that children will need to be picked up at 12:30 pm on Wednesday the 28 February.

Bookings on Hero
Please book an appointment with your child’s teacher. You will be able to book a 10 minute interview. If you have more than one child, you will not be able to book back to back interviews. This is to allow time for you to move from one class to the next and to ensure that the scheudle stays on track.

Bookings are now open for both of these evenings and can be made electronically through the Hero app. If you need support to make a booking on the Hero app please email your child’s teacher.

If you need language support please add a note in the comment to the teacher section at the time of booking so that we can arrange a translator.

SPOTLIGHT ON YEAR 5 & 6
Welcome Back
As we gear up for another exciting year, we want to extend a warm welcome to all our new students and families joining us for the first time, and a heartfelt welcome back to our returning students and families. The start of a new school year is always filled with anticipation and excitement. It’s a time for new beginnings, new friendships, and new opportunities for learning and growth.

Our team is comprised of:
Room 16 – Mrs Carolyn Hutton
Room 17 – Mrs Jasmine Kim
Room 18 – Mrs Miranda Blincoe
Room 19 – Mrs Mary Waters
Room 20 – Mr Stephen Gordon

During the time together this term we have been getting to know your child further,  their interests and learning style.  Students will also be completing some initial assessments to assist with identifying your child’s area of need in literacy and numeracy. In particular, the team will be using new approaches to support and improve spelling and maths basic facts knowledge.

Swimming
Our classes have swimming sessions every weekday morning and we ask that you help ensure that your child is prepared (towel, togs, goggles). It is imperative that your child attend these sessions to help improve their confidence and develop their swimming stroke. Students work in their ability group with an instructor and seeing the progress already made by some students highlights the success of the programme and future water safety.

Student Council
At the start of the term students who are interested in being a member of the Student Council have been completing their application forms and preparing a short presentation that will be recorded and shared with their peers, teachers and the Senior Leadership as part of the election process. The election will take place next week as the Student Council members play an important role across the school and we have items and events to plan. There will be another set of elections held in the middle of the year to give more children opportunities take on leadership.

Camp
Our Year 5/6 Camp will be held in Term 2 at Carey Park Camp. The dates for the camp will be Wednesday 12 June – Friday 14 June. Additional information about our Education Outside the Classroom will be forwarded later this term.

Partnership
We believe that strong partnerships between home and school are essential for student success. We’re excited about the possibilities that this new school year holds and look forward to working together with you to make it a memorable and rewarding experience for all our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Attendance – Every Day Counts
As the school year gets underway, we wish to stress the importance of your child attending school regularly, as every day counts. As a school, we know this to be true and monitor the attendance rates of all students twice a term – week 5 and week 10. If we are concerned about your child’s attendance we will make contact with you as we work together to ensure your child attends school regularly.

We have analysed the attendance data for Sunnybrae 2023 and wish to share this with you alongside the Ministry of Education guidelines – see the table below.

It is pleasing to see that we are slightly above the Ministry’s target of students attending regularly and that we only have a small percentage of students who are chronically absent i.e. 2%.

In 2023 we had 79 students whose attendance fell between 80-89%, which is below the Ministry of Education’s guidelines of regular attendance. A lot of these students fell into this group as they had been absent as they travelled overseas. We can appreciate that this has been important as families have reconnected after COVID.

We look forward to working with you to ensure that all students at Sunnybrae attend school regularly, and should you need help in ensuring your child comes to school, please contact your child’s teacher and/or a member of the Senior Leadership Team – Lorene Hurd, Jane Sharpe and Helen Rennie-Younger.

We also ask that when planning overseas travel, please ensure approval is sought beforehand from Lorene Hurd our Principal, by emailing office@sunnybrae.school.nz with travel dates and destination. Where possible, the time away from school should be during, or include, the school holidays to minimise the number of days absent from school.

Learning Assistants/Teacher Aides
At Sunnybrae Normal School, we are fortunate to have the following teachers aides/Learning Assistants working with us this year. They bring compassion and expertise in working with a wide range of students in our care.

From left: Jamie Liu, Nancy Song, Candy Wong, Melissa McIntyre and Joel Ligaliga.

Get on Board with Hero
Sunnybrae’s goal is to use the Hero platform for our communication from Term 1 in 2024. We are, therefore, asking that our school whānau go through the process of signing up to Hero. We are excited about the features that Hero has to offer our families. Download the app today.

School Arrival Time is 8:30 am
At Sunnybrae, we ask for children not to arrive at school before 8:30 am as teachers are often in meetings and preparing for the day in the classroom, and children are, therefore, unsupervised if they are here early.

We have a number of children arriving early each day. Please can you help us by either booking your child into YMCA Before School Care. The YMCA offer a wonderful programme for students. Please support our school and ensure students do not arrive before the 8:30 am bell.

Naming your child’s school items.
Please ensure any item that comes to school is clearly named – this includes clothing, drink bottles and lunchboxes, shoes, school bags and swimwear. With the students attending swimming lessons and clothing being removed – we are acquiring lots of un-named items in Lost Property.

Crossing Duty Helpers Needed in 2024
Thank you to the families that have offered to help with crossing duty. We appreciate your commitment to keeping our students safe. We still need helpers for the following slots:

Tuesday Afternoon 3:00 – 3:15 pm

Friday Morning 8:30 – 8:55 am
If you are able to help by doing the crossing duty on one of these days, please let Katrina Bambury know at office@sunnybrae.school.nz or call 09 443 5058.
