The PB4L focus for next week will be on:
Independence: Everywhere – Try new things

International Students
We are thrilled to announce the arrival of 12 short-stay international students who will study in Term 3. These students come from various parts of the world, bringing with them a wealth of cultural diversity and unique experiences.

To help our new students feel welcome and supported, we encourage everyone to make them feel at home.

Over the coming weeks, we will be organising several activities and events to celebrate our New Zealand culture and foster a sense of belonging. These include:

  • Cultural Experience Days: Opportunities for students to experience New Zealand foods and customs with their classmates.
  • Buddy Program: Pairing new students with current students to help them navigate their new environment and build friendships.

We believe that the inclusion of international students will greatly benefit our school’s learning environment and broaden our understanding of the world. Let’s all come together to ensure they have a positive and memorable experience. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm in welcoming these new students.

Welcome Room 3 Students
We are excited to announce the opening of our new Room 3 classroom with their teacher, Mrs Karen Hasell and extend a warm welcome to our eight new entrant students. This is a wonderful opportunity for our school to grow, and we are thrilled to have your child join us on this journey.

In our new classroom, we aim to create a nurturing and stimulating environment where every student feels valued and inspired to learn. If you have any questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to speak to Karen. Once again, welcome to the Sunnybrae Family. We look forward to an exciting and successful year ahead.

Student Acknowledgment

Congratulations to Agalia from Room 20 for her outstanding achievement in the New Zealand Robot Olympiad 2024, held at the University of Auckland during this school holiday. Agalia received one Silver Award, one Bronze Award and one Technical Award across multiple categories.

Agalia’s passion for robotics has truly shone through. Competing at this event is a great achievement, and we are incredibly proud of her efforts and accomplishments. Agalia’s involvement in the Robot Olympiad not only demonstrated her skills but also her commitment to learning and innovation. We are confident that her experience will inspire her fellow classmates and contribute to our school’s values of excellence in science and technology. We look forward to hearing more about her journey and seeing her future successes.

If you have a child interested in robotics, please see https://cares.blogs.auckland.ac.nz/education/robot-olympiad/ for more information.

BOT UPDATE:
Grants
Sunnybrae Normal School receives a limited amount of funding from the government that only covers the basics. We rely on PTA fundraising efforts, grants and International Student fees to bridge this gap.

This year we applied for several grants for our wonderful students. I am pleased to share with you that so far, all our applications have been approved. We are grateful to the organisations below, which have made these grants possible and have contributed to our school community.

OfficeMax Max e-Grants (Barnardos)
We have received a $2,475 grant from OfficeMax/Barnardos which has gone towards Learning Assistant hours. This has been of immense value to our students and teachers.

Milestone Foundation Ltd
The Milestone Foundation has approved a grant of $9,150, which has allowed us to purchase 30 new Chromebooks to be shared across the school. This will enhance our students’ digital learning experience. How exciting!

North and South Trust Ltd
The North and South Trust has given us a grant of $6,974 for sports uniforms. We were able to purchase new netball uniforms and bibs, basketball singlets and touch rugby tops. This is the first time our touch teams will have uniforms, and we can’t wait to see them on the field.

Once again, thank you to the organisations which have made these grants possible.

HEALTH AND SAFETY NOTICE:
Gates Closed at all Times

For the safety and security of our students, the gates at Sunnybrae Road, Ellen Avenue, and Northgrove Avenue will now be closed at all times. While the gates are not locked, they are equipped with new latches that are too high for young children to reach. For the safety of all children, please help us by keeping the doors closed.

Classrooms are open at 8:30 am, and all students should be at school by 8:45 am. On the rare occasions that your child is late to school, they need to do the following:

  • Students Arriving Late (Unaccompanied): If your child arrives at school late in the morning, they must enter via the Sunnybrae Entrance. They can use the electronic gate keypad to ‘buzz’ in if they cannot open the pedestrian gate. The office staff will open the driveway gate remotely, and your child will come onto the school grounds and then sign in at the office.
  • Parents Accompanying Late Arrivals: If you bring your child to school late, you can easily open the latch yourself at any gate. Please ensure your child signs in at the office as usual.

Important Reminders:

  • Close the Gate: Please ensure you close the gate after you enter and exit the school grounds to maintain safety for all of our students.
  • Contact Information: If you have any questions, please contact the office at 09 443 5058 or via email at office@sunnybrae.school.nz.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and secure environment for our students. Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Attendance at Sunnybrae
As  a school we monitor the attendance of all students including monitoring students who consistently arrive late to school. The Ministry of Education has an expectation that all students’ attendance at school will be 90% or above and this is considered to be regular attendance.

We have received the following information from the Ministry regarding our Term 2 attendance. This data shows that 72% of our students are attending school regularly. It is also interesting to note that only 70% of our students were consistently on time to class every morning.

As a school community, it is important that we work together to ensure that all students arrive on time for school and attend regularly, as we know every day counts.

Pack a Spare Uniform
As the weather has been quite wet recently, we kindly remind you to pack a change of clothes for your child. This will ensure they stay comfortable and dry throughout the day should they get wet or fall over in the playground. Thank you for your cooperation.

Kind regards
Lorene Hurd,
Principal
