SPOTLIGHT: YEAR 1 & 2 Inquiry Unit on Stories The students have listened to stories and have used Compare and Contrast Maps to look at the differences and similarities between the stories. They are learning that stories help us understand things about our past, New Zealand and the world we live in. It has been exciting to have parents visit our classrooms and read us stories that are special to them and their cultures.
Room 1 I liked it when my mum came in to read us a story in Russian because I speak Russian. By Lidia I loved it when Lidia’s mum read us a story. I liked the book because the characters became friends. By Dixie
Room 4 The stories were fun. I liked both of the stories. I chose them. The stories were Chinese and English and I wanted everyone to understand the words. By George I like the elephant story because the blind boy touched the elephant’s leg and it felt like a tree branch. It was fun to have George’s mum come and read the story. By Kasper
Room 5 I liked the story about all the birds. I liked all the different colours they had. By Joshua I loved having a story read to us. By Dylan
Room 8 I liked giving Bee Bot instructions and bossing it around to get it where I wanted, so I could retell a story. By Lachlan K I liked how I fixed the instructions on Bee Bot to retell the story of The Three Little Pigs. By Enara
Room 10 Room 10 have been reading lots of stories from Aotearoa. One of our favourites is Maui and the fish. We are also making some beautiful art of Maui’s hook with our buddy class. My favourite story is Maui and the fish because the fish turned into the North Island. By Logan I like Maui and the fish because I like the details. By Isabella
Room 11 We are learning about different countries and they all have different unique stories. By Mischa Myths are what people believe about how their country was created. By Jeevan

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES: Fire Drill As part of our ongoing monitoring of our Emergency Procedures, we had a Fire Drill in the afternoon of Wednesday 14 August. The fire bell announcement was made, children lined up outside in their respective areas where a roll count was taken. These drills also test our indoor and outdoor speakers ensuring emergency announcements can be heard. This drill took 5 minutes to complete. Following the drill and the ‘all clear’ announcement was made, teachers completed a debrief document with their class.

Learning Support Awareness Day 29 August 2024 All tamariki in Aotearoa deserve access to the support they need to thrive in education. This can look like a teacher aide, specialist, or professional advice for teachers. The need for learning support far outstrips provision – for every seven tamariki who access support, three miss out. Ministry of Education learning support staffing has a 16% vacancy rate. Teachers, education support staff, principals and learning support specialists agree on what is needed: • Increase the number of teacher aides • Increase the number of learning support specialists This is how the Government could really make a difference in education for tamariki. Sign up for info on how you can help make the change our tamariki need at: nzeiteriuroa.org.nz/campaigns/nga-aukaha
