“I liked kicking the ball into the goal at P.E time. I got lots of goals and it was fun.” By Noah

Room 2 has gotten bigger and bigger as the term has progressed, and we have more students coming next term! As part of settling into school, we have been learning about the different activities we can do in the classroom like playdough, magnetic building blocks, reading puzzles and maths games.

“When I licked it, it tasted like salty cheese.” By Haileigh.

Room 10
We did some writing about our fun time at our school disco.

Yesterday afternoon there was a school disco. I saw the food stand and the DJ. I heard a song called Dynamite. I bought a donut. It was delicious. I got a prize. It was car stickers.” By Logan.

PTA Math-a-thon Fundraiser
A big thank you to everyone who has contributed so far! With just one week left until the testing days next Thursday and Friday, let’s keep the momentum going. Every bit of effort counts as we strive for our $6,000 target to help make our new playground a reality. Keep up the great work, everyone. There’s still time to ask your family and friends to donate to this great cause!

PRIZES
On Wednesday, the classroom with the highest funds raised will be treated to a lemonade iceblock to celebrate their achievement. There are more spot prizes to be handed out, and every child who has received a donation will go into the draw.

Also up for grabs is a family of 4 pass to attend the “The Great Kiwi Circus” on Friday 4 October at 6pm. These tickets will be awarded to the top 17 students who raise the most sponsorship money.

Certificates will be sent home after the students have been tested, showing their results on the Math Quiz.

Head to sunnybraeptamathsathon.raiseit.co.nz and make an account. Share your account with friends and family to watch your leaderboard grow. Math-a-thon sponsorship contributions can also be made on your myKindo account.

Teacher Only Day
Tuesday 29 October – A Professional Learning Day (PLD), often referred to as a Teacher Only Day, is a designated day for teachers to engage in professional development activities without the presence of students. These days provide teachers with opportunities to enhance their skills, collaborate with colleagues, and stay updated on new educational strategies, curriculum changes, and teaching tools. PLDs are essential for improving teaching practices, reflecting on classroom experiences, and planning for future lessons. By dedicating time to professional growth, teachers are better equipped to support student learning and adapt to the evolving demands of education.

YMCA Out of School Care are taking expressions of interest to run a supervised session on this day. Please use the link below to register your child for the Teacher Only Day.

Māori Language Week
Today our Māori students gathered for a photo together – celebrating how proud they are to be Māori.

BOOK WEEK: 21-25 OCTOBER
Join us for a fun-filled Family Literacy Quiz Night on Wednesday, 23rd October from 6 to 7 pm in the school hall! Test your reading and word skills as a family and enjoy some friendly competition at this free event. All ages are welcome, so bring everyone along for a night of learning and laughter!

Scam Awareness
Police are aware of a recent overseas rise in scams which involve an unexpected package being sent to addresses with a gift and a QR code inside. Police believe this scamming method could find its way to New Zealand and we are urging people to be vigilant.
The gift will have the recipients address, but not include the sender’s information or be from a known retailer. When the recipient opens the package to see what it is and possibly who sent it, there is a QR code to scan to find out who sent the gift. The QR code allows the offenders to then access any and all data on your phone or device you used to scan the code, including financial information such as your bank account login details, and personal data.
Police are urging anyone who receives one of these gifts not to scan the QR code, the gift can either be kept or discarded, but do not scan the QR code. Please report information to Police online at www.police.govt.nz… or call Police on 105.

ENROLEMENT:
Out of Zone Ballot for 2025

We are excited to announce there will be a ballot for 2025 out-of-zone enrolments at Sunnybrae Normal School. The deadline for applications for places in Years 1-6 is 15 October 2024. Please email officemanager@sunnybrae.school.nz to register.

Enrolment into Intermediate School
If you are the parent of a Year 6 student, please ensure you have enrolled your child at a school for next year. Even if you live in zone, you still need to go through the enrolment application process. If you have not yet done so, please make the time to do this – it helps schools with their planning.

Donated School Uniforms
We are collecting used school uniforms in good condition to support families in need. If you have any uniforms your child has outgrown, please consider donating them to the school. Your contribution will make a big difference and help other students feel confident and ready for class.

Kind regards
Lorene Hurd,
Principal
SUNNYBRAE NORMAL SCHOOL
