SPOTLIGHT ON YEAR 1 & 2
Welcome Room 2

Room 2 welcomed six new students this term who have settled into school and are
learning about all the exciting things we do at Sunnybrae. This is what they are
enjoying at school:
Mecca: “I like playing on the playground and going on the monkey bars. I like doing art too.”
Liam: “I like playing with the Lego and playdough. I like singing in Kapa Haka.”
Sierra: “I like reading. I liked making the Gruffalo art in class.
Brielle: “I like playing on the playground. I really like playing games in maths.
Oliviea: I love using the playdough and marble run. I like reading too.”
Sanuli: “I like playing and colouring.”

Book Week Review

Our recent Book Week was a celebration filled with excitement, creativity, and storytelling. The talented New Zealand authors Jon Stubbs and Anne Kayes visited the school to share their books, offering insights into the writing process and sparking curiosity among the students. Classroom windows transformed into tributes to favourite books as students decorated them with vibrant art and creative writing. For the Year 3-6 students, a lively Book Quiz tested their knowledge of famous stories, characters, and authors.

A standout event was the Family Quiz Night, where nearly 20 families gathered for five rounds of book-themed questions on characters, stories, and everything Literacy. Laughter and friendly competition filled the air as families teamed up to showcase their literary know-how.
The grand finale was the Book Character Parade, where creativity shone as students and teachers dressed up as their favourite characters. The parade featured everyone from Harry Potter (including Sunnybee) to superheroes, The Cat in the Hat, Willy Wonka, The Paper Bag Princess, and many more. The week ended on a high note, celebrating books, imagination, and the joy of reading!
We want to thank all the parents for supporting our Book Week.

PTA UPDATE
Colour Run Fundraiser
A big thank you to the students who have completed an online profile for our Crazy Colour Run fundraiser. Last Wednesday those superstar fundraisers who had signed up were applauded in our assembly and rewarded with a yummy lemonade iceblock at the end of the day, for their contribution towards fundraising for our playground upgrade.

Tomorrow there’s another chance for the class with the most profiles to enjoy a
Jucie Iceblock treat at lunchtime. The School Fun Run dashboard is showing that
Room 19 has the most sign-ups to date so let’s see who can get the most sign ups.
SIGN UP TODAY BY CLICKING HERE and your child may end up with a yummy
treat.
Don’t forget that there is also the chance for one lucky classroom to “slime a teacher”. This will be awarded to the classroom that has raised the biggest amount on the 15th November. The School Fun Run Dashboard has Room 15 in the lead for this great prize. Your child will love the chance to throw green goop at one of the staff so get sharing your online profile with your friends and family and let’s work together to raise the much needed money for our playground.

If you would like to volunteer on the day, please click on this link to complete the Parent Helper form. We will need helpers to set up the course, cook sausages on the BBQ and sell iceblocks. I can’t wait to see you at our event!

The PTA will be selling white t-shirts for the Crazy Colour Run to help showcase the
vibrant colors best during the event. These are available on pre-order from myKindo for $10 each – click here to order. Online orders will close at 9am on Thursday 14
November.

CELEBRATING OUR PARENT VOLUNTEERS:
Crossing Monitors
Hi Lucy, how long have you been doing Crossing Duty for? Since my son Elliot
who is in Year 6, was in Year 1. I also used to bring my daughter who was a
preschooler back then and set up a little rug on the grass for them so they could watch me and stay safe!
What do you enjoy about this? I love getting to know the kids and their families. Lots of kids wave out to me and I also get to have a chat to parents as well. It’s so good being able to make connections with our school community. I like being able to help out at the school and give something back to them as the teachers give so much to our kids. Most importantly, it’s nice to know that we are keeping our Sunnybrae families safe.
What do you have to do? I do the crossing duty on Friday afternoons. I get to school by 2:55 pm, put the high vis vest on, grab the flags and the crossing sign and head out to the traffic lights. I normally finish up by about 3:15 pm once the kids have come out of school.
Would you encourage other Sunnybrae families to help out? Yes! Its easy! Get
involved. Its only a short stint once a week and will help our school out.

Thanks to Lucy and all our volunteer crossing monitors for getting our kids to school
safely. Currently Sunnybrae has a slot that needs to be filled on a Thursday morning
from 8:30 to 8:55 am. We would really appreciate your support! Please contact the
office on office@sunnybrae.school.nz if you are able to help.

Gumboot Friday
We are thrilled to inform you that, thanks to your incredible support, we raised over
$430 for Gumboot Friday! This fantastic contribution will go a long way in helping the Gumboot Friday initiative created by I AM HOPE to provide FREE kids counselling in a timely manner. We are so grateful for your generosity and our students participation in this meaningful cause. Thank you for making this year’s Gumboot Friday such a success!

Hindi Language Week
Last week our Hindi students gathered for a photo together – celebrating how proud they are to be Hindi.

Emergency Procedures
As part of our ongoing monitoring of our Emergency Procedures we had an
Earthquake Drill coinciding with the Nationwide Shake Out event in the morning
of Thursday 24 October. These drills also test our indoor and outdoor speakers
ensuring emergency announcements can be heard. This drill took 9 minutes 33
seconds to complete.
All students were prepared for the drill by their classroom teacher. An announcement
was made indicating an earthquake. Once the announcement was made, staff and
students dropped to the ground to Drop, Cover and Hold. This required people to stay in the building and get under the nearest table or strong structure and get into the turtle position (on knees, rolled into a ball, hands over head). Following the drill and the ‘all clear’ announcement was made, students evacutated to their assembly areas and all students were accounted for. On the return to the classroom, teachers completed a debrief document with their class.

SPORTS UPDATE:
Junior Huff ‘n Puff
Tomorrow, Tuesday 5 November, all the Year 1 and 2 students will be taking part in their annual Huff ’n Puff Fun Run event. The event will be held on the school field at
1:45 pm and all parents and caregivers are welcome to come and cheer them on.
Children will need to wear their school uniform and bring to school – a hat, water bottle and suitable shoes to run in (such as sneakers – these do not have to be in school colours). Running in bare feet is also fine if preferred by the child.

Year 3-6 Athletics Day
Tuesday 12th November, 9:15 am – 2:50 pm
Our Year 3-6 students have been busy practising their athletics skills over the past
week in preparation for the Year 3-6 Athletics Day. Additional trials will continue next
week where our top performing athletes will then be selected to compete in track and field events for their year group. Place-getters from these events will go on to represent Sunnybrae at the Interschool Zone Day on 21 November.
Students not participating competitively will have a day of fun activity games to play in the hall and top courts. All our parents and caregivers are invited to come along and watch all the events. Students will need to bring a hat, water bottle and wear their PE top if they have one. Sneakers are optional.

Outstanding Sports Fees
We kindly remind you that all outstanding school sports fees should be settled by the end of November. We currently have over $2000 in outstanding fees and payment is essential to ensure we can continue providing quality education, resources, and support for your child’s academic growth. Please check your myKindo account to see any amounts owed for your child. If you have any questions or require assistance with the payment process, please don’t hesitate to contact the office. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter and for your continued support of our school community.

Student Lunches
There has been a large increase in students asking for additional food after eating their packed lunch. We kindly request your assistance in ensuring that your child’s lunch contains enough food to sustain them throughout the school day. While we are happy to support when necessary, our resources are limited. By packing a little extra food, you can help ensure your child has enough energy to stay focused and engaged in their learning. We greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter.

Kind regards
Lorene Hurd,
Principal
