SPOTLIGHT ON YEAR 5 & 6
Universe Inquiry Project
This term has been a whirlwind in Years 5 and 6. Our space inquiry is wrapping up, and we have become all but experts on the way our planet and solar system work.
Year 6 students have been busy preparing for their graduation, and handing over to Year 5’s, who are gearing up to be the leaders of our school in 2025. We are so excited for all the events coming up, so keep an eye on Hero for all that is going on. Year 6 parents, don’t forget to order t-shirts!

Room 16 has been making dioramas to finish our inquiry into Our Complex Universe.  A lot of creativity and problem-solving have been involved, as we have put our ideas into our displays.
Some comments from our Room 16 students:
“We have been painting our planets and shaping them,” Abi.
“We used Lego and homemade play dough to make the moon, and we used glow-in-the-dark stars too,” Samir.
“I learnt that there are eight planets in the solar system,” Paige.
First I painted the background black and then after school I went to Spotlight (the shop) and got some foam balls and some white paint. The next day I went to school with the foam balls split into two bags, one with the balls for my group and the other with the rest of the foam balls for the class to share with each other. Secondly, I painted stars onto the back ground then Kiara painted all eight of the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn ,Uranus and last but not least Neptune!” Sophie.

Room 17 has made a space quilt with our amazing student teacher, Mrs Flexton. We explored different solar system elements, and then used fabric, paint, felt, needles and thread to sew together our ideas. Each ākonga has made a square, and we are now trying to decide on a place in the school to hang our magnificent work!

We have been very busy in Room 19 completing mixed media space art, using collage, watercolour and paint splatters, and 2024 Doodles showcasing some of this year’s highlights, along with many other end-of-year work and tasks! With so much to do, will we be ready to leave when school closes for the year?

PTA UPDATE:
Colour Run Fundraiser
A big thank you to everyone for their support of the Crazy Colour Run. Last Friday was a huge success with all our students, teachers and many parents and families getting involved. Special thanks to the parents that helped with the sausage sizzle and iceblock stall. This was very popular with our students at lunchtime. The total raised to date is $7,900. Well done Sunnybrae. This has gone a long way to funding our new playground.

SPORTS UPDATE:
Basketball Success
A huge congratulations to all the Year 2-4 basketball teams that played their final games for the semester last week.  We are so proud of the effort and commitment you have put into your teams as you attend trainings and the games, having fun and showing great sportsmanship. An extra congratulations go out to the Sunnybrae Suns and the Sunnybrae Hawks who both placed second in their grades. Tino pai rawa atu! – Excellent!

Interschool Athletics
Last Thursday a team of 36 students participated in the annual Interschool Athletics at Onewa Domain, competing against Northcote Primary, St Mary’s Northcote and Willow Park Schools. The weather was rather wet at times but this didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of all the competitors.

Sunnybrae students participated with enthusiasm, demonstrating our RICE values and fantastic sportsmanship. Results from the day are as follows:

Leading by Example
When our lovely caretaker was away, our incredible Principal stepped out of her usual leadership role to lend a hand for the hāngī preparations. Here is Lorene, rolling up her sleeves and mowing the lawns – showing us all what it means to lead by example.

It’s all in a day’s work for someone so dedicated to our school and community. Ngā mihi nui for going the extra mile!

VOLUTEERS NEEDED:
Drone Filming and Editing
We are seeking a volunteer with experience in drone filming and video editing to help create a promotional video showcasing our school grounds. This would involve filming aerial footage and helping to edit it into a short, engaging video. If you have the skills and equipment needed and are interested in supporting this project, we would love to hear from you. Please reach out if you can help bring this vision to life.

Chess Lessons for Students
We are looking for a volunteer to help run a lunchtime chess session at school. This would involve guiding students as they learn and practice the basics of chess in a fun, supportive environment. No formal chess experience is required—just a willingness to help students develop their skills. If you’re available to assist, please let us know!

Crossing Duty Monitor Needed
We are desperately seeking a parent volunteer to assist with crossing duty on Thursday mornings from 8:30am to 8:55am starting Term 1. Your help would be greatly appreciated in ensuring the safety of our students as they arrive at school and need to cross Sunnybrae Road at the pedestrian lights.

Please let us know if you can help for any of these tasks by calling the office on 443 5058 or email office@sunnybrae.school.nz

MONDAY 3 FEBRUARY 2025:
Meet the Teacher Conferences
At Sunnybrae Normal School, we aim to build connections with our students and their whānau/family. Strong relationships form the foundation for happy, healthy students who are prepared to learn. With this in mind, in 2025, we are starting a new initiative by holding our Meet the Teacher on the first day of school. Meet the Teacher conferences are an opportunity to:

Establish Strong Relationships: The Meet the Teacher conferences allow you to connect with your child’s teacher face-to-face. Building a positive relationship early in the year establishes open communication and mutual trust. Teachers are not just educators, they are also partners in your child’s growth and development. These initial conversations allow you to share valuable insights about your child, their learning style and any specific needs they may have. Teachers value learning about your child’s strengths and interests as this gives them ways to connect with your child to build a strong relationship.

Ask Your Questions: The Meet the Teacher conference is a time to ask questions. A direct conversation with your child’s teacher can clarify and make you feel confident and informed. This is your opportunity to learn about the classroom routines, homework, weekly timetables, expectations and teaching strategies that will shape your child’s school year and other things that interest you about school life.

Understanding the Classroom Environment: This is your opportunity to learn about the classroom routines, expectations and teaching strategies that will shape your child’s school year.

We look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Meet the Teacher sessions on Monday 3 February 2025. Students are encouraged to attend the conference with their parents/caregivers. The teachers will spend the whole day meeting with all of their parents/caregivers. The YMCA will provide a programme during the day if you need childcare.

Your involvement in these early conversations will help set the stage for a positive and productive year for your child. Together, we can create the best possible learning experience for every student. You will be notified in advance via the Hero app as to when conferences are open for booking.
