1.  Welcome to Sunnybrae

This week we would like to welcome the following new students and their families to our school community:

2.  Parent/Teacher Conferences 2021

Wednesday 24 February from 1:20 pm – 7:00 pm

Thursday 25 February from 3:20 pm – 5:00 pm

You are invited to a Parent/Teacher conference to meet with your child’s teacher for 10 minutes on Wednesday 24 February or Thursday 25 February.

Please note: Room 8 conferences will be held on a different day and time. Further information will be sent out to Room 8 parent/caregivers next week.

School Closure
School will close and the children will all go home at 12:30 pm on Wednesday 24 February.

After School Care Programme
YMCA provides After School Care in the school hall. You may make prior arrangements directly with the YMCA if you would like to enrol your child from 12:30 – 3:00 pm on Wednesday 24 February. In order to enrol go to ymca-akl-ham-bop.aimyplus.com and click on Special Day or call (09) 480 7099.

If you need a translator, please contact the office directly as soon as possible.

3. International Food Festival 2021

Our annual International Food Festival is being held on Friday 12 March between 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm. This event has become one of the major events on our school calendar. In addition to bringing funds into the school, it serves to bring our school community together to celebrate our cultural diversity. 

We can’t do it without a truly combined effort from everyone. We are looking for support preparing for the International Food Festival. Further details and parent help forms will be sent out early next week. Thank you to Angela Temata from Harcourts Milford who is sponsoring this event. Visit Angela’s website angelatemata.co.nz.

4.  Uniforms

5. School Drop-Off – 8:30 – 845 am

A reminder that students are expected to be at school between 8:30 and 8:45 am every morning. Please ensure your child has a great start to their day and arrives at school by this time. Parents are welcome to come to the classroom to pick up their children at 3:00 pm.

7.  Scholastic Book Orders

Online book club orders are now open until Friday 19 February.

We are unable to accept cash orders in the office.

8.  Learning Through Units of Inquiry

Each year our syndicate teams embark on 6 units of inquiry as part of a school wide Inquiry Framework. These units integrate learning from a range of areas, and are often driven by Science, Technology, Social Studies, Health and the Arts. The units also provide authentic opportunities to learn and apply Literacy and Numeracy skills as well as our school values and learner qualities. By having an inquiry based approach, our units foster curiosity, build essential knowledge and skills, and develop understandings around important concepts. Students investigate their world and beyond through rich learning experiences. 

There are 6 inquiry themes across the school and each syndicate has a unique focus for each theme which allows us to map the New Zealand curriculum within these units from Year 1 to Year 6.

The themes are:

• Identity and Wellbeing 
• Histories and Locations
• Curiosity, Creativity and Expression
• STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics)
• Organisations, Systems and Processes
• Our World

Once classes are settled into routines, the syndicates will begin exploring the following units of inquiry:

Year 1 – Organisations, Systems and Processes

Big Idea: We have developed important ways to keep ourselves safe (water and sun safety).

Year 2/3 – Identity and Wellbeing

Big Idea: We need to act responsibly to help keep ourselves healthy, happy and safe (Personal relationships, sun safety, food and nutrition).

Year 4/5 – Organisations, Systems and Processes

Big Idea: People who achieve, inspire and lead positively are considered heroes.

Year 6 – Identity and Wellbeing

Big Idea: An awareness of identity helps us to appreciate ourselves and others.

9.  Sport at Sunnybrae

We are looking forward to another exciting sporting year at Sunnybrae. Below is a list of the sports that will be offered during the year, along with the teacher you can contact if you have any questions. Thank you to those who volunteered to coach and manage last year; we truly appreciate your assistance. Now is the time to start thinking about whether you can help out this year by coaching or managing. We will support you in any way that we can, however, without a volunteer to coach, we are unable to enter teams into the various competitions.

Junior Basketball, Year 2 – Anna Blair ablair@sunnybrae.school.nz

Games are played on Tuesday afternoons at the North Shore Event Centre, beginning in March and running throughout the year. 

Middles Basketball, Year 3-4 – Eva Roding eroding@sunnybrae.school.nz 

Games are played on Thursday afternoons at the YMCA, Akoranga Drive, beginning in March and running throughout the year.

Senior Basketball, Year 5-6 – Mary Waters mwaters@sunnybrae.school.nz and Sheryle Snellaert ssnellaert@sunnybrae.school.nz  Games are played Thursday afternoon/early evening at the YMCA, Akoranga Drive, beginning in March and running throughout the year.

Junior Netball, Year 1-3 – Megan Ebborn mebborn@sunnybrae.school.nz, Wendy Frazer wfrazer@sunnybrae.school.nz 

Games are played on Monday afternoons at Netball North Harbour in Terms 2 & 3. 

Senior Netball, Year 4-6 – Sheryle Snellaert ssnellaert@sunnybrae.school.nz

Games are played at the Netball North Harbour courts in Northcote or WGHS. Year 4 teams play on Monday afternoon and Year 5 & 6 teams play on Saturday mornings in Terms 2 & 3. 

Hockey, Year 3-6 – Rachel Olliver rolliver@sunnybrae.school.nz Games are played at the North Harbour Hockey Stadium in Albany on Monday afternoons in Terms 2 & 3. 

North Harbour hockey also offers a Fun Sticks Hockey programme for children aged between 5-7 years old. Refer to this address for individual registration forms: http://www.harbourhockey.org.nz/Participation-Programmes/Fun-Sticks-Yr 1-3

Touch Rugby (summer), Year 3-6 – Anita Knight aknight@sunnybrae.school.nz

The games are played at Kaipatiki Park in Glenfield on Wednesday afternoons in Terms 1 and 4.

Cricket, Year 3-6 – Sheryle Snellaert ssnellaert@sunnybrae.school.nz

The Cricket Blitz Programme runs for Term 4 and was played on either Tuesdays or Fridays last year (this could change). This programme is free of charge. 

Table Tennis Year 5-6 – Viv Morley vmorley@sunnybrae.school.nz. Games are played on Wednesday evenings over Terms 2-4 at the North Harbour Table Tennis Stadium in Akoranga Drive (behind the YMCA).

Flippa Ball, Year 4-6 – Sheryle Snellaert ssnellaert@sunnybrae.school.nz Games are played at AUT Millennium in Albany on Sunday afternoons, throughout the year. Children must be strong swimmers to play this sport. 

Children will need to watch the daily notices and attend sports meetings to express their interest in playing. Permission letters will then come home for parents to complete and sign. This signed document will be followed up with confirmation of team placement and any fees will need to be paid before your child will be able to play.

Please note that once permission is received, your child will be registered as a player in that team and are making a commitment to play for the season. This year we will continue to place a special focus on teaching our students about committing and belonging to a team or group.

Please talk with your child about the sports they would like to get involved in this year and encourage them to have a go.

10. Sushi Fridays 2021

Dear Parents

“SUSHIDAY” is back for Term 1, 2021. 

Archers Rd Sushi & Donburi has found a new owner as of last week. This means you will NOT be able to order sushi lunch from the shop and all orders MUST be submitted on our website www.sushiday.co.nz.

www.sushiday.co.nz will still be owned and operated by the previous owner “Dan & Jen” as they have retained the sushi lunch business to become an independent catering business from the shop front to solely focus on catering school lunch.

 “SUSHIDAY” will be operated from the commercial kitchen outside the shop so you can be assured the sushi lunch will not only be the same quality that your kids have loved for the past years but It’s made by the same people (Yes! Dan the sushi guy) and the same yummy recipe.

You can order sushi lunch EVERY FRIDAY on the website www.sushiday.co.nz by going to “Order School Lunch” on the menu bar and register your account by selecting your school as “Sunnybrae Normal School” if you are ordering for the first time OR use your existing account.
