5. Resilience and Wellbeing Project
|
Resilience and Wellbeing are key factors to ensure a happy and fulfilling future for our young people. In 2021 Sunnybrae Normal School staff will be leading students through ‘The Resilience Project’. This evidence-based positive mental health programme builds resilience and happiness, focusing on three main strategies: Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. A parent evening has been scheduled to take place early in Term Two where further information will be shared.
We are partnering with Resilience Youth Australia who has surveyed more than 350,000 school students aged 8-18 over recent years. During the next two weeks, our Year 4 – 6 students will complete the 2021 Resilience Survey online during class time. Students typically take 20-30 minutes to complete this survey.
Data from the survey will be reported in aggregate descriptive form only, by year level and gender, and no individual student responses can be identified.
The survey is completely anonymous and voluntary. It collects the self-reported resilience and wellbeing of students and will provide valuable information to assist create and maintain the best culture of wellbeing and resilience that we can.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s participation in this survey project, please contact either Wendy Frazer wfrazer@sunnybrae.school.nz or Mary Waters mwaters@sunnybrae.school.nz.
Thank you for your support.

These permission slips need to be returned to Ms Snellaert by Friday 26 March.
If we have to cancel games due to Covid, we will not be playing make up games. If we go into a large scale lockdown, dates and days of competitions may be changed or cancelled. Save-a-days are due to weather cancellations only.

If your child has never played Netball, they are required to register online at ‘Netball North Harbour’ from the main menu, left hand side where it states: New member registration. You will need to sit with them to assist with their registration.
Fees will be payable once teams have been finalised and will be approximately $85 per child. This cost also includes the supply of an umpire for your child’s team.

Flippa Ball is a simplified version of Water Polo and is offered to our Year 4, 5 and 6 students. The pool is shallow (approximately 1.3m) allowing players to stand on the bottom of the pool. The players are permitted to walk along the bottom of the pool if they do not have the ball. If in possession of the ball they must swim with the ball or pass the ball with one hand to another player. The game consists of two halves of 10 minutes duration and players are ‘subbed’ on throughout the game. Your child must be a strong swimmer to play this game.
Competition Dates: Term 2, Sunday 9th May – Sunday 4th July (No training on Queen’s Birthday)
Venue: AUT Millennium, Antares Place, Mairangi Bay
Day and Time: Sunday – played anytime between 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm (depending on which grade they are in).
If your child would like to compete and represent Sunnybrae Normal School, and it works with your family commitments, please have them collect a permission slip from Ms Snellaert, Room 17. Thank you to those students who have already signed up.
Please note that once we receive a permission slip, your child will be registered as a player in that team and are making a commitment to play for the duration of Term 2.

12. Scooter Training Reminder Year 1- 6 Students
|
Monday 22nd – Friday 26th March 2021
This is a reminder that next week Constable Steve Harwood will be offering scooter training to our students. In the past this has been particularly popular with our Year 1-3 students. As part of the training, he will take small groups of students out onto some of the local footpaths to practise the skills that they have learnt.
We still have some spaces, so if you would like your child/children to participate in this training please email Melanie Hanson (mhanson@sunnybrae.school.nz) with your child’s name and room number by 7.30am Monday 22nd March 2021.
Students will need to bring their scooter, HELMET and a raincoat (if needed) to school on the following days:
Monday 22nd, Tuesday 23rd, Wednesday 24th and Friday 26th of March.
Please note: As Constable Harwood may be called out on other Police work, we cannot allocate your child to a specific day. Your child will need to bring their scooter and helmet each day. Once they have completed their training on a given day, they do not need to bring their scooter back to school.
|
13. Cycle Road Safety Training Year 5 – 6 Students
|
Monday 29th March – Thursday 1st April 2021
Constable Steve Harwood will be offering Cycling Road Safety Training to our Year 5 & 6 students. He will be teaching road safety skills when riding a bike on footpaths and roads. This is very valuable training if your child is already riding their bike around the neighbourhood, and good preparation for them if they will be cycling to intermediate next year.
To participate in this training your child must:
– have a safe bike with working brakes
– have a helmet that fits them correctly
– already be confident and competent at riding a bike
– have a red rear reflector attached to their bike to be used on the road
As part of the training, he will take small groups of approximately six students out onto the footpaths and roads behind our school and around the suburb of Hillcrest.
If you would like your child to participate in this training, please email Melanie Hanson: mhanson@sunnybrae.school.nz by Friday 26th March 2021.
Due to varying numbers in different classes, potential absences and Constable Harwood possibly being called out on other Police work, our timetable needs to remain flexible. It is important that your child comes to school with their bike and helmet each day so that they are available to complete their training on any of the following days:
Monday 29th March – Thursday 1st April 2021

The Sense of Camp
By Gina Xiang Room 19
The view of Shakespear Lodge was old, creepy and even haunted, it looked as if there were cobwebs in every corner of my cabin. The rough waves shimmering in the water caught my eye. Bright and colourful rock holds made the camp feel more vibrant. Everyone huddled together to view the beautiful sunset.
Walking through little round balls of stinky animal poo was not pleasant. The scent of tropical bug repellent was very strong. One hairy pig fart made me almost pass out.
Delicious cooked macaroni and cheese healed my hungry stomach. Sweet flavoured and warm apple crumble tasted scrumptious after a long day. The disgusting and liquidy chicken pie sauce made me want to throw up. My tongue was burning after I ate the spicy chilli mince.
The screaming of excitement from children was so loud my ears were bleeding. My chattery cabin mates woke me up all night. Pans clattering in the kitchen sounded like they were making a fine dish. Pigs were snorting as loud as elephants.
The freezing cold water had me shivering all day. My soft and cozy blanket felt like candy floss. The raft my team built was very strong and safe. Long arrows were sharper than kitchen knives.

Camp Senses
By Charlotte Barlow Room 19
The look on everyone’s excited faces was as if they had just seen a unicorn.
There were exotic birds chirping in a harmony of gracefulness.
My pillow muffled the noise of monsters stomping through the night.
The gooey strawberry mousse was mud and my spoon was squelching through it.
My feet shivered as the freezing cold water ran over them.
I was a cheetah scrambling up the rock wall.
I saw sunscreen oozing out of bottles at every moment of the day.
I felt the bristly hair of the stinky pigs.
As we left for the long, windy bus trip back to school I felt a mix of emotions.

The Senses of Camp
by Riyan Nair Room 19
The soft breeze brushes bushes aside to reveal sinister rat traps.
Lightning mountain boards zoom down the hills.
Children scale the rock climbing wall like flies on a bumpy wall.
Arrows zip through the air and stab into the crunchy crusty foam.
Elephant pigs snort and spit as we feed them leftover food scraps.
Cheeky elegant peahens fight and challenge each other for food.
Soft feathered kiwis call in the night creeping through the carpet of grass.
Freezing water sprays us in our newly made raft.
