We also welcome Bernadette Barrett (R16), a Student Teacher from Massey University.

2. Enrolments at Sunnybrae Normal School
|
If you live ‘in zone’ and have a child turning 5 within the next year, please make sure you enrol them as soon as possible. Please also encourage any new in zone families to enrol their children as soon as they can to help us with future planning.
Our ‘Out of Zone’ numbers for Term 3 enrolments will be announced shortly. Please encourage any new families to enrol.

3. School Closures – Term 2
|
Teacher Only Day
As previously advised, all schools have been allocated eight additional Teacher Only Days between 2020 and 2022 through the Accord signed in 2019. Our next Teacher Only Day is on Friday 4 June and our school will be closed for instruction on this day. During this time our teachers will be attending a professional development day with other schools from our Pupuke Kahui Ako (Community of Learning).
The YMCA will be running their programme in our school hall on Friday 4 June to support families needing childcare. Times and prices are as follows:
7:00 am – 6:00 pm – $52 or 9:00 am – 3:00 pm – $42.
Queens Birthday
The School will also be closed on Monday 7 June for Queen’s birthday.
Parent/Teacher Mid-Year Report Meetings
Parent/Teacher Mid-Year Report Meetings will be held on Wednesday 30 June and Thursday 1 July. Children will go home at 12:30 pm on Wednesday 30 June. More information will be sent out closer to the time.
On Wednesday 30 June, the YMCA will be providing a special programme from 12:30 pm – 3:00 pm for $14. This is for any families needing childcare during this time.

4. Community Engagement Focus Group

Community Engagement Focus Group Invitation

We would like to invite you to join our Community Engagement Focus Group. This group will be working with different cultural groups to add to our main entrance so that it is representative of the cultures of the people within our school community.

5. Introducing Our 2021 Student Councillors

Introducing Anne Ngafuchi – Room 19
Hi, my name is Anne Nagafuchi and I am part of the Student Council this year.
You might have seen me at the crossing on Sunnybrae Road doing some Travelwise work last year. I have also been part of the choir and orchestra and this year I will be in the Kapa Haka group and the ukulele group too. In my spare time, I like crafting and doing Minecraft.
The reason why I wanted to be in the Student Council is that the school has done so much to help me so I wanted to give back to the school community and help make it a better place for everyone.

6. 2021 Sunnybrae Inquiry Framework
|
The 2021 Sunnybrae Inquiry Framework provides an overview of the inquiry-based learning explored by our students throughout their Primary School journey. Framed by 6 transdisciplinary themes, these units have been designed to ignite curiosity, build knowledge, foster conceptual understanding and develop a range of skills.
The units combine learning from a range of subject areas, in particular, Science, Technology, Health, Social Studies and The Arts. Each unit has a Big Idea and learners are encouraged to critically and creatively think, apply communication and collaboration skills, observe, research and investigate. An inquiry-based approach promotes the importance of asking questions and fosters student ownership of learning. When learners also show significant interest in a particular element of learning, teachers move flexibly in their teaching to support this.
Each syndicate team will communicate with families about the units of inquiry so that families can support the current learning at home. Due to different factors, including lockdowns, significant events such as The Olympics and other school initiatives, the framework may change.

7. Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

This week our PB4L focus has been on showing cooperation everywhere.
Our lessons have focused on:
- Playing safely
- Keeping our hands and feet to ourselves

8. Scholastic Book Orders
|
|
|
This week students were given the latest Scholastic Book Club catalogue to bring home. All books need to be ordered and paid for online through: scholastic.co.nz/LOOP

9. Yummy Sticker Promotion
|
Our school is participating in the Yummy Sticker promotion and we are asking you to collect the Yummy cut-out labels from bags and the stickers from apples. These are available from New World and PAK’n’SAVE. A collection sheet was sent home in Term 1. Participating schools get a share of $200,000 worth of sports gear, depending on the number of stickers collected. To download and print more sheets go to https://www.yummyfruit.co.nz/schools/. Please hand your completed sheets into the school office.
