Enrolment at the school is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available on our school website.

Applications for out-of-zone places are now being invited for those students who will become eligible for enrolment during the period of Term 3 and Term 4. The Board of Trustees has determined the following approximate number of out-of-zone places remaining in particular levels within the school.

  • Year 2/3 = 15
  • Year 4/5 = 12
  • Year 6 = 3

The deadline for receipt of applications for out-of-zone places is 9 July 2021.

If a ballot for out-of-zone places is required, it will be held on 12 July 2021. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.

If you live in the home zone and have not yet signalled your intention to enrol your child later this year, please contact the school immediately to assist us to plan appropriately. Email: office@sunnybrae.school.nz  or https://www.sunnybrae.school.nz/enrolment/

4.  GATE Inquirer’s Club and Westlake Science Leaders

Students in the Year 4/5 GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) Inquirer’s Club have been part of a second Science experience with Westlake Boys High School. Four high achieving WBHS Science students visited last Thursday, bringing with them specialised distillation equipment. The inquirers were involved in setting up the apparatus, and watched and participated as the science leaders demonstrated how the equipment worked. This extended their knowledge around states of matter, boiling, evaporating and condensing, as well as the concept of distillation. This tied in brilliantly with the learning recently occurring in class. We look forward to another visit with more great science in Week 10.

5. Lunchbox Ideas

We know it can be hard to think of ideas for school lunchboxes and we hope that you find these suggestions helpful.

Allergies: Please note if there are food allergies in your child’s classroom (some common allergies are: peanuts, tree nuts, dairy products or eggs) please do not include these in your child’s lunchbox. Allergy letters were sent home at the beginning of the year for those classes that may need to consider these. If you are unsure please check with your child’s teacher.

Brain Food

Each day at about 10:00 am, after fitness, every class has ‘brain food time’. This is an opportunity for students to have a quick snack to keep their energy levels up during our morning lessons.

Following are some suggestions for a brainfood snack:

  • Fresh fruit (apple, oranges, grapes, mandarins, tomatoes, feijoas, kiwifruit, bananas. Chopping pieces up can be more manageable for some students)
  • Fresh vegetables (carrot sticks, cucumber pieces, capsicum, broccoli, cauliflower)
  • Dried fruit (peaches, apricots, raisins, dates, prunes, bananas)
  • Nuts and seeds

Lunchbox Ideas

  • Vegetables and Fruits (chopping bigger fruit beforehand can make it easier to eat for some children – a variety throughout the week maintains interest and ensures a balance of nutrients)
  • Grain foods (bread, rice, pasta, breakfast cereals)
  • Dairy products (cheese and yoghurt)
  • Lean meat and alternatives (lean meat, chicken, seafood, eggs, nuts & seeds, beans & lentils)
  • Plain popcorn
  • Rice crackers
  • Leftovers from dinner
  • Sandwiches
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Hummus – add some to sandwiches or put a couple of tablespoons in a container to go alongside vegetable sticks, crackers or bread.
  • A small handful of nuts and seeds
  • Cereal bars
  • Plain biscuits
  • Muffin or scone
  • Potato or pasta salad
  • Sushi
  • Pasta and rice dishes
  • Vegetable sticks – carrot, cucumber, capsicum or celery with an optional dip such as cottage cheese, hummus, pesto, greek yoghurt or tzatziki
  • Small (cherry) or chopped tomatoes
  • Fruit pottles
  • Mini salads – coleslaw or a lettuce salad with tomato, grated carrot and cucumber
  • Small packet or handful of raisins, dates, prunes or dried fruit

Water Only

We are a water only school and encourage our students to bring a drink bottle with water in it each day to school. We also have drinking fountains in the playgrounds and students are able to refill drink bottles in their classrooms or from the taps attached to the drinking fountains.

Please do not send flavoured milk (e.g. chocolate, strawberry, banana), energy drinks and juice to school.

Please do not include lollies or chocolates in your child’s lunchbox.

6.  PTA Math-a-thon 2021 Fundraiser

Math-a-thon testing is Friday 2 July. Please help support your child/ren by:

  • Continuing to encourage your child/ren to learn their maths facts as part of their home learning programme this week in preparation for testing on Friday 2 July.
  • Helping your child/ren seek sponsors from your family, friends and workmates.
  • Sending your child to school with their sponsorship form on Friday. Thank you prizes will be given and their test paper sent home to collect sponsorship money.

Help Needed

If you are able to help test our students on Friday 2 July between 9:00 and 11:00 am, please contact our Deputy Principal, Karen Rodger by email at krodger@sunnybrae.school.nz

Thank you for supporting our Term 2 fundraising venture.

7.  PTA Fundraising Initiative – Are you able to support us?

In Term 3, our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is running an exciting fundraising initiativeThe Sunnybrae Normal School PTA Raffle 2021 – 20 days of prizes! All money raised will go towards a permanent shade structure to be built at the back of the school hall facing towards the fields.

We will have fantastic prizes all set out in calendar format, one prize per day for 20 days. You buy a ticket, enter the draw and every day a new prize is drawn. If you win a prize and the calendar hasn’t finished, you get placed back into the draw for another chance to win something else!

How can you help?

We are currently looking for people to contribute $50 vouchers for our raffle. For example, you might like to purchase a $50 voucher from a store of your choice and donate it to our raffle. If you would like to gift a voucher to Sunnybrae Normal School please contact our Deputy Principal, Karen Rodger – krodger@sunnybrae.school.nz or drop a voucher at the office. Any support would be greatly appreciated.

8. Sunnybrae Cultural Project Underway

It was a pleasure working with our Samoan families at our Cultural Group Focus meeting last Thursday as they shared their stories and chose images that represented their culture. This was the first step in creating a series of beautiful panels to be placed at the front entrance of the school that represent the cultures of the people within our school community. We will be working with an artist/designer to create the final version of all of the panels.

It was an informal and enjoyable evening and as a school team, we are looking forward to meeting with our other cultural groups in the near future.

Stay tuned … we will be in touch!

10.  Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)

This week our PB4L focus has been on showing respect in the cloak bays and toilets.

Our lessons have focused on:

  • Being hygienic
  • Washing and drying hands
  • Using soap, paper towels and hand sanitizer correctly
