7.  Matariki Celebrations next week

Matariki 2022

As a school, we are looking forward to celebrating Matariki next week, leading up to our first Matariki Public Holiday on

Friday 24 June.

This year we will have a school-wide focus of Whanaungatanga – Building Relationships. A range of planned activities will integrate the concept of Whanaungatanga into our classroom programmes with opportunities for the students to connect with each other and staff, within and across teams.

As part of our celebrations, we will hold special assemblies for the students at the beginning and end of the week, including a performance from our Senior Kapa Haka.

8. Kia Ora for our Māori Community

Kia Ora

We would like to thank our Māori community for joining us last week. We are so grateful for your time, input and ideas. A special part of this evening was having our students lead us in our karakia and waiata to begin the presentation. Together we have worked on a new end of the day karakia for our kura to be introduced as part of our special celebrations for Matariki.

9. Cultural Focus Groups

As part of our Strategic Plan 2022, we are inviting you to be part of our Community Engagement Project. We are creating a series of 32 beautiful panels to be placed at the front entrance of the school that represent each culture of the people within our school community.

This project began in 2021 when we met with 7 of our school cultural groups. A big thank you to those groups who have already shared the special elements about their culture. We would love your help to lead the groups below if you have time.

We plan to meet on Wednesday 22 June at 7:00 – 8:00 pm and would like to invite those of you who associate with the following cultural groups to join us in the staffroom:

  • Indian
  • South African
  • African
  • Irish
  • Scottish
  • Sri Lankan
  • British
  • Malaysian

The Cultural Group meeting for our Chinese Community will be held in Week 10 on Wednesday 6 July 7:00 – 8:00 pm

You are welcome to bring extended family members who may be interested in supporting us in this creative project. It is a time to talk, share stories and ideas. No preparation is required, just come and chat. You are welcome to bring your children along and we will provide supervision with some quiet activities to entertain them.

Please RSVP to Viv Morley – vmorley@sunnybrae.school.nz

10. We are Sunnybrae Information Evening

Thank you to the members of our school community who came to the ‘We are Sunnybrae’ Information Evening last night. It was wonderful to share details of the programmes we have developed at our school, engage in rich discussions and answer your questions about your child’s education. We appreciate your suggestions and ideas. The feedback you have given us about Mental Health Education will help us to develop future programmes at Sunnybrae.
