Potential NZEI Teacher Strike  Wednesday 31 May 2023
The teachers’ union known as the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) has notified all schools in New Zealand that their members may be taking strike action on Wednesday, 31st May. We are not sure at this time if the strike will occur or not, but we thought it best to be prepared just in case.
If the strike goes ahead, we won’t have enough teachers to open all classrooms. However, we will be able to open for ‘supervision only’ for parents that cannot make alternative arrangements for childcare. 
If you are unable to make other arrangements, please drop your child at school at 8:30 am, no earlier please. Children who are attending school tomorrow will need to go to the School Hall. Pick up at 3:00 pm will also be from the School Hall. 
If you require before school or after school care, please contact the YMCA. Before School care runs from 7:00 – 8:30 am and After School Care runs from 3:00 – 6:00 pm. Go to their website CLICK HERE.
If you have a standing order with EzyLunch and your child will not attend school, please remember to cancel your child’s order before 9:00 am on Thursday.

Parent/Caregiver Survey 2023

Personal Health and Physical Development

Every two years we are required to review an area of our Health Curriculum. As part of this review, we are required to consult with our school community. This year we are reviewing the curriculum area ‘Personal Health and Physical Development’. The review will help inform our Health Curriculum teaching programmes for our students.

Horray, last Thursday, our Year 5 & 6 students competed in a Cluster Sports event. Students participated in a day-long competition, playing either Hockey, Softball, Ripper Rugby, Table Tennis or Soccer. Many of our students took up the opportunity and challenge to try a new sport and had a fantastic day learning and competing against other schools. 
We’d like to say a special thank you to our wonderful parent helpers who supported our teams and helped to make the day possible (as well as a success!). We really appreciate you giving up your time to be part of this special sporting day with our cluster schools. 
At Sunnybrae, we value fairplay and sportsmanship. It was wonderful to hear back from teachers and other schools that many of our Sunnybrae students were demonstrating the school RICE values and sportsmanship at Cluster Sports.
Congratulations to the following students who were nominated and acknowledged for this in our team assembly on Monday.

Cluster Sports Exchange Recount
Phew! Last Thursday was a really big and fun day, it was Cluster Sports! Doing hockey meant I could stay at Sunnybrae and we were versing Willow Park and Northcote Primary. Cluster Sports was about trying something new, learning new skills, meeting new people and of course…have fun! 
As I played I wondered how the other Sunnybrae students were doing as different sports at different places. Each sport went to places that were suitable. Later in the day the sky clouded over but fortunately the rain didn’t really appear. It certainly was a big and fun day! By: Annika Xu Rm 20

Natural disasters can be frightening and distressing experiences for children, teenagers and adults. Extreme weather conditions are part of the natural landscape in many countries. These events can be overwhelming and terrifying when they happen. The loss caused by natural disasters can be significant – including the loss of a family member or friend, a pet, a home or belongings.

After a disaster, it is common for children of all ages and stages of development to become distressed. Parents’ own emotional reactions may be complicated by worrying about how their children are coping, what their children’s reactions mean, how serious they are, and how to manage children’s emotions and behaviour. The following information will help parents understand children’s reactions; know how to encourage children to naturally resolve their distress, and answer their children’s questions.

This is Part 3 of a 7 part series…

WHY SOME CHILDREN ARE MORE AFFECTED THAN OTHERS

Children’s reactions differ as a result of what they ‘bring’ to the traumatic event, what they experienced during the event and how the important people around them react to their distress.
What children bring to the disaster
Children who have experienced a traumatic event in the past or who had existing emotional and behavioural problems are more likely to be affected. After a disaster, both children and parents can be tremendously resilient. However, even resilient people can experience distress following a disaster.
What children experienced during the disaster 
The more directly the child experienced the disaster, the more distressed they are likely to be. How fearful or threatening children thought the experience was is also important. For instance, if a child thought they were going to die, this is a strong predictor of post-disaster distress. Death of loved ones and the extent of other losses experienced by children (such as property and pets) is also very important.
How others respond
During and following a disaster, family and community support can bring people closer together. Communities can become more united in their efforts to look after each other. This kind of community support is helpful in making children feel that things are going to be OK. However, if children are exposed to a lot of frightening and danger-related information (see below for more detail), this can cause their distress to continue.  Article to be continued in Week 6

PTA UPDATE:
30 Days of Prizes Raffle
Raffle tickets are selling fast. Thank you to all those that have purchased your raffle ticket and and returned the stub to your teacher. You can still request more tickets to sell. All stubs must be returned to school to be included in the draw.
There will be prizes for the student in each syndicate that sells the most raffle tickets, and all students who sell their allocated 2 tickets are in the draw to win a voucher. 
We are excited for the raffle draw to start next Thursday for Day 1. Daily prize winners will be contacted by phone and posted on Facebook.

Out of Zone Ballot for Entry 
Enrolment at Sunnybrae Normal School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available from the school office. Students who live within the home zone are entitled to enrol at the school.

For students who live out of zone, the next opportunity to apply is before Monday 29 May 2023, this will be for students starting between 17 July and 22 September 2023 in Year 0, Year 1, Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 for out of zone students.

There will be an out of zone ballot held on Monday 5 June 2023 for students not living in the school’s home zone. If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.

Thank you for all your support last Friday for PINK SHIRT DAY. We are pleased to say our school raised $515.40 with all money going to pinkshirtday.org.nz.

These funds are used to help create a kinder, more inclusive Aotearoa where everyone feels safe, valued and unafraid to be themselves. We achieve this by:

• Providing more than 2,700 kura and schools with free information, resources, and activities that help promote wellbeing and prevent bullying
• Helping develop a free wellbeing programme for ALL secondary schools
• Funding InsideOUT to run rainbow-inclusive workshops in schools around Aotearoa
• Providing free resources and information about bullying prevention on the Pink Shirt Day website
• Enabling collaboration with those who experience higher rates of bullying including rainbow, Māori, Pasifika, Asian, and people with disabilities, so we can uplift and celebrate diversity, fairness, and connection

Brain Play teaches science & technology classes to Kiwi kids aged 5 – 13, right across the country!
