Grand Unveiling
It was so fabulous to see so many families attending our Grand Unveiling last week to celebrate the new facilities and artworks at Sunnybrae Normal School. Thank you so much for taking the time to come along and join in with the activities and for supporting our PTA fundraiser. If you have any wonderful photographs taken on the day and would like to share, please email them to office@sunnybrae.school.nz

The Arts is a current focus for the Year 3 and 4 team.

The students have been learning about different elements of dance and drama, and how these are used to express ideas and tell stories.
The students have also been making abstract masks out of cardboard as part of the visual arts programme. Exploring different shapes and using a mix of smooth and corrugated textures have been important elements in creating these unique masterpieces. Learner Qualities such as creativity, self expression and collaboration are specifically fostered through the exploration of The Arts. It is exciting to see students working together and expressing their ideas in different ways.

Part 4 of 5
Mana Tū
Children need the skills to understand and deal with difference and adversity such as courage, resilience, self discipline, humility and tenacity.

Mana Tū develops when children know:

  • they can learn and be successful
  • what they are good at.
  • what areas they need to work on.
  • they can achieve their goals with hard work, determination and a “never give up” attitude.

Children demonstrate Mana Tū when they:

  • respect that everyone learns differently.
  • are a generous, kind and humble classmate
  • show gratitude when learning from others who think about the world differently to them.
  • are self-disciplined and make good choices.

Natural disasters can be frightening and distressing experiences for children, teenagers and adults. Extreme weather conditions are part of the natural landscape in many countries. These events can be overwhelming and terrifying when they happen. The loss caused by natural disasters can be significant – including the loss of a family member or friend, a pet, a home or belongings.

After a disaster, it is common for children of all ages and stages of development to become distressed. Parents’ own emotional reactions may be complicated by worrying about how their children are coping, what their children’s reactions mean, how serious they are, and how to manage children’s emotions and behaviour. The following information will help parents understand children’s reactions; know how to encourage children to naturally resolve their distress, and answer their children’s questions.

This is Part 7 of a 7 part series…

KEY STEPS
It is common for children to experience a range of different emotions and behaviours that may be a change from their ‘pre-disaster’ personality.

Children look to their parents to figure out how they should react.

Re-establish as many of your family’s normal routines as quickly as possible.

Listen to your child and accept their feelings.

Be supportive and remind them that the adults in their lives love them and that they are safe. Make sure your children know the family has a plan for natural disasters and that they have jobs within this plan.

Most children will recover naturally following the disaster. For the small number who don’t, there is effective psychological help.

FURTHER HELP

If you have any questions or have tried these strategies and are concerned about your child’s progress, please reach out to your classroom teacher for guidance on where to obtain support.

Enrolments
In Zone Enrolment
If you live ‘in zone’ and have a child turning 5 this year, please make sure you enrol your child/children as soon as possible. Please also encourage any new ‘in zone’ families to enrol their children as this helps us with future planning. Please visit our website www.sunnybrae.school.nz and complete the enrolment form.
If you are moving away from Sunnybrae, please contact the office as soon as possible.

REMINDER:
After School Pickup

We ask for your assistance in the following ways:

  • Be on-time to collect your child no later than 3.15pm.
  • Please do not take home another student unless you have contacted their parents to obtain permission.
  • If you see a student who is not accompanied by a parent/caregiver just outside of our school grounds and you are concerned, direct the student to return to the school office to wait for their parents to collect them. You may wish to walk the student back to the office. The Office Staff will call the parents.
  • Ensure your child knows what gate they will be picked up from and by whom.
  • Clarify each morning if your child will be attending After School Care or not.
  • If you have booked your child into the YMCA after school care, but you decide to collect your child personally, please let the YMCA know in advance.
  • If there are any changes to pick up plans during the day, please call the office on 443 5058.

It would be most helpful if all students knew at least one parent’s phone number or have the number(s) written down and stored in their school bag in case of these situations. By ensuring that these processes are followed, it makes for a safer and stress free pickup for your child.

Kind regards
Lorene Hurd,
Principal
SUNNYBRAE NORMAL SCHOOL

REMINDER:
Please note that all children are to be collected from school by 3.00 pm. If you are unable to collect before this time, you may be interested in booking your child into the YMCA after-school club held in the hall.
