The PB4L focus for Term 4 Week 3 will be on:
Respect: Everywhere – Looking after our belongings, using equipment correctly.

Enjoying our Environment
We have started Term 4 by enjoying being in our outdoor environment. The weather has improved and the outdoors beckon.

In Room 19 we have been preparing for Athletics by using the courts for fitness, reading and practising speeches along with gathering inspiration for our writing.

Room 17 had a wonderful time playing Batten Hockey with our ever-friendly neighbour, Room 18, on a bright, sunny day.  It was fun to learn a new game.  What a great way to enjoy the beautiful weather, making our Brain Break extra special.

Another day, we created a personal Strengths Continuum on the turf as an introduction to our Keeping Ourselves Safe programme. We are proud of ourselves! Then, we took our Feeling & Emotions cards outside for group discussions. We appreciated the fresh air and warm sun.

Room 20 has started our Henri Rousseau inspired art that links with our Animalia Unit of Inquiry.

Our Room 20 students have also been making bookmarks that include reading inspired quotes. We have have been putting these bookmarks to use and doing some reading outside as part of our Read-a-thon effort.

Hats on at School
During Term 4 and Term 1, all students are required to wear a black Sunnybrae bucket hat to protect them from the sun.
These can purchased from NZ Uniforms. We have a small selection of second hand hats in the Donated Uniform shop. Parents can request the key from the office to access the shop. Please make sure to clearly name your child’s hat. Any unnamed hats are redistributed to the Donated Uniform shop.

Read-a-thon
Our Sunnybrae Read-a-thon online fundraiser is going well. We currently have nearly 150 students signed up to the Read-a-thon and they have already raised over $3,648 for our literacy programme.

We have partnered with ‘Go Raise It’ to run our online fundraising platform so you can share your child’s fundraising page with friends and family far and wide! We have some great fundraising spot prizes up for grabs. Thanks for your support.

Congratulations
Cove from Room 15 was the lucky winner of our first premium prize draw last week.
Another prize was drawn today.
All our Read-a-thon readers will complete their Bingo cards next week. Remember to share their sponsorship pages with friends and family. Thanks for supporting our Read-a-thon readers.

BOOK WEEK: 24 – 27 OCTOBER
Book Swap

On Tuesday, 24 October, there will be a Book Swap in the School Hall.
Classrooms will visit the hall and students can choose a book to take home.

Book Character Parade
On Thursday, 26 October, students are encouraged to come to school dressed as their favourite book character.
At 9:10 am there will be a formal parade on the Covered Turf for those who are dressed up. This will be a great deal of fun. Parents are welcome to come and watch the parade.

Special Visitors Day
In conjunction with Book Week, Sunnybrae students would like to invite all their Special Grandparents, Best Aunties, Favourite Uncles, or Family Friends to visit our school on Friday 27th October.
Events will include:
8:30 am – The Book Fair Fundraiser opens. Visitors are welcome to visit the library with the children to view the book selection. Books will be available for families to purchase for home or to donate to the Sunnybrae Normal School Library. Eftpos and cash options will be available to purchase the books.
9:00 – 10:10 am – Our Special Visitors Assembly in the Hall.

10:10 – 11:00 am – Our Special Visitors are invited to visit classrooms to read stories with the children and participate in classroom activities. During this time, they are also

Earthquake Drill
On Thursday 19 October, Sunnybrae Normal School ran an Earthquake Drill as part of National ShakeOut Day.
All students were prepared for the drill by their classroom teacher. An announcement was made indicating an earthquake drill. Once the announcement was made, staff and students followed procedure. This drill was held during morning tea, so students and staff outside were required to move into place away from buildings, large objects and overhead wires and get into the turtle position. People inside the buildings got under the nearest table or strong structure and moved into the turtle position (on knees, rolled into a ball, hands over head). The entire drill took 15 minutes to complete. Following the drill and the ‘all clear’ announcement, teachers completed a debrief document with their class.

SAFETY AROUND SCHOOL:

STOP, DROP and GO Zone on Sunnybrae Road
From Week 4 until the end of the year, we would like to trial a STOP, DROP and GO ZONE in our Sunnybrae Road bus bay.
This is a Student Council initiative that aims to support smooth and safe drop-offs for our families. The plan is for a quick stop and quick drop and then go. This will prevent some from parking in the bus bay for long periods.
So what is it? Cars will be able to drive into the bus bay and children will exit the vehicle while parents remain in the car. Children must exit the car on the left-hand side of your vehicle. This allows our children to step onto the sidewalk safely.
Sunnybrae Student Council members will be onsite at drop off to help you out. Please support our student leaders with this new initiative. Thank you for your cooperation.
