Spotlight on Year 5 & 6
Term 2 has started well and the senior students are all busy and motivated to learn.
One of the highlights has been our shared experience creating historical timelines on a range of tropics such as technology, fashion, buildings, games and animals. They worked in small groups to plan and create a mural of their chosen topic.

Student Recount:
“When we finished our plan, we started on our good copy. I was drawing the 1980s computer. It was really cool to see how much tech has changed over the years. When I finished the pencil drawing, I got to colour it in with crayons. When all of the groups finished, we put the crayons back in the box. Then Mr Gordon told us we could walk around and look at all of the amazing art. One thing that stood out for me is that they were all different.” By Elliot – Room 18

“After we got put into groups, all of us set off to the hall. Mrs Kim explained the instructions once and we were ready to go! The theme was past, present and future. (how things evolved) After the instructions, we sat in our group all feeling a little excited about what was going to happen. Mrs Kim handed out all the practice sheets while my group discussed what we were going to do. Firstly we were clueless, then I had an idea. “Why don’t we do phones?” I said. Luckily my group agreed! We started sketching and planning until the teachers said to stop.” By Hing Yi – Room 18

The Year 5/6 Pasifika Cultural Group enjoyed making coconut candy in the shared kitchen on Tuesday 7 May.

BOT NEWS:
Update from the Sunnybrae Normal School Board of Trustees
The hard working staff at Sunnybrae Normal School are committed to continuous learning and personal growth through professional development. Our most recent training opportunities include structured literacy, restorative practice and tikanga Māori.
A structured literacy approach is now in place across the school. Our junior classrooms follow BSLA (Better Start Literacy Approach) which requires formal accreditation through Canterbury University. Our Senior classrooms use the iDeaL approach via an online learning platform.
In line with being a PB4L (Positive Behaviour for Learning) school, all staff have attended several restorative practice sessions which help to provide a set of tools to manage behaviour when things go wrong, using a relational approach.
Brenda MacPherson from MAC (Māori Achievement Collaborative) has been extremely helpful at providing regular, culturally responsive support to teachers as we continue along our path of cultural capability.
Our teachers’ growth greatly supports the success and growth of our tamariki.
By Catrina Scott – BoT Staff Representative and Room 14 Teacher/Kaiako

We are delivering Mental Health Education through the Mitey programme.
This integrated programme is designed for NZ children. It supports schools to deliver an evidence based approach to Mental Health Education for Years 1-8.

Safety To and From School
We are asking all parents/caregivers be considerate of our local businesses by ensuring you adhere to the parking time limit at the shops on Sunnybrae Road.
If using the shops carpark for drop off, please make sure you park in the angle parking so that your child can exit the vehicle and use the footpath in front of the shops. Dropping children at the parallel parking spots is very dangerous as they are required to cross the vehicle entry to the carpark.
Our parent volunteer crossing monitors are there to assist the children crossing the busy Sunnybrae Road. Please follow their directive and only cross when they have instructed.  They are also responsible for keeping the flow of traffic moving and may hold students until there is a group to avoid unnecessary multiple crossings. We thank you for your co-operation.
When parents and students are entering the school grounds at the Sunnybrae entrance, for the safety of all, we request you walk on the footpath besides the driveway – not on the driveway, and follow the footpath around in front of the office block. Please do not cut across the driveway by the traffic island if heading to the Year 1 and 2 blocks with your child. We want all students to learn that footpaths are the safest place to walk.

Has Your Child Received Support for Anxiety or ADHD?

Enrolment at Sunnybrae
If you live ‘in zone’ and have a child turning 5 this year, please ensure you enrol your child/children as soon as possible. Please also encourage any new families to enrol their children, as this helps us with future planning. Please visit our website www.sunnybrae.school.nz, and complete an enrolment form.

Year 1 Out-of-Zone Places Available
We also have places available for Year 1 out-of-zone enrolments. Applications are available on our website.

Moving?
If you are moving away from Sunnybrae, please contact the office as soon as possible. Thank you.

Naming your child’s school items
Please ensure all items that come to school are clearly named. This includes
clothing, drink bottles, lunchboxes, shoes, school bags and swimwear. We do our very best to get the named items back to your children as soon as possible. We appreciate your cooperation.

Kind regards
Lorene Hurd,
Principal
SUNNYBRAE NORMAL SCHOOL

REMINDER:
Please note that all children are to be collected from school by 3.00 pm. If you are unable to collect before this time, you may be interested in booking your child into the YMCA after-school club held in the School Hall.
