SPOTLIGHT: YEAR 5 & 6
Update from the senior classes
Room 16 has been learning about sports innovation and how different material properties are used in sports. They had a task to provide a fencing team with a new face mask. It has to be safe, and functional but also look awesome! They imagined, planned, created their face mask. We also tried to persuade others to buy it. Here are some of our designs!

In Room 19 we have been enjoying working in teams to change and create new rules for ‘Rob the Nest’. This will lead on to the teams developing some new invasion games using all sorts of different PE equipment. So far we have brainstormed ideas of what these games may look like.

Room 17 has been inspired by Tongan Language Week, and we have tried some different methods for making tapa cloths. These are common across the Pacific Islands, and their patterns take inspiration from ‘akau and monumanu (plants and animals).

Each class has been engaging in a variety of activities to celebrate and recognise Tongan culture. As a special treat, our Pasifika cultural group enjoyed making lolly leis.

On Friday our Tongan students gathered for a photo together – celebrating how proud they are to be Tongan.

PRODUCTION REVIEW:
Music Through the Ages
“Amazing show.” “The kids were awesome.” “What a fantastic performance!” These were just a few of the comments from family and friends who attended the shows held over two consecutive Friday nights at Westlake Girls High School’s Event Centre. This was a fabulous venue with ample seating to allow us to host over 400 family and friends of our Sunnybrae students at each show.
In Music Through the Ages, four friends embark on a musical journey guided by their quirky parents and heavy-metal-loving aunt. As they explore diverse genres, from Bollywood to Techno, and evolving music tech, they uncover the power of music to bridge generations and create harmony. With humour and heart, they learn that family and music truly transcend time.
Both lead casts delivered strong performances on their nights, and the supporting dance casts of all 16 classrooms performed their dance routines admirably adding fun and excitement to the overall production. Nicko Vella and Anna Blair, did an admirable job of bringing the show to life with creative staging adding a dynamic element to the performance. Congratulations to the entire cast and crew for a job well done!

Learning Support Awareness Day
29 August 2024
All tamariki in Aotearoa deserve access to the support they need to thrive in education. This can look like a teacher aide, specialist, or professional advice for teachers. The need for learning support far outstrips provision – for every seven tamariki who access support, three miss out. Ministry of Education learning support staffing has a 16% vacancy rate.
Teachers, education support staff, principals and learning support specialists agree on what is needed:
• Increase the number of teacher aides
• Increase the number of learning support specialists
This is how the Government could really make a difference in education for tamariki.

SPORTS UPDATE:
Year 3-6 Cross Country
Thursday 29 August from 1.30pm
We are excited to announce that our annual Year 3-6 Cross Country event is just around the corner! This is a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their athletic abilities, and enjoy an afternoon of outdoor activity. Parents and caregivers are all welcome to come and watch the races. The event starts with the Year 6 boys and girls championship runners, Year 5 boys and girls championships runners, then all Year 4 boys and girls followed by all Year 3 boys and girls. The last event will be the Fun Run for Year 5 and 6 girls then Year 5 and 6 boys. Races start on the top courts by Rooms 15-20. The finish line is weather dependant and will be advised on the day.
Students will need to have suitable shoes to run on the footpaths as well as their SNS PE shirt (if they have one) to change into before running.
