SAFETY BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL:
Stranger Danger
It’s essential for parents to teach their children the importance of being cautious around strangers. While it’s important to be polite, children should understand that not everyone has good intentions. Remind them never to accept gifts, rides, or help from someone they don’t know, and to always stay within sight of a trusted adult. Encourage open communication, so they feel comfortable telling you if anyone makes them feel uneasy. By instilling these habits early, you help protect your child and give them the tools they need to navigate the world safely.

Math-a-thon PTA Fundraiser
Sunnybrae Normal School PTA is excited to be running our 2024 Math-a-thon Fundraiser! This is an opportunity for our students to work on their numeracy skills and learn their basic facts – whilst fundraising for an exciting playground upgrade all current and future students can enjoy.  A great playground space helps children develop physical strength, coordination, social skills, and creativity. It encourages teamwork, problem-solving, and fosters emotional resilience through active, imaginative play. Fundraising is a great way for our whole school to come together and work towards a common goal.

Our students will be seeking online sponsorship for their efforts during our Math-a-thon. Simply visit https://sunnybraeptamathsathon.raiseit.co.nz/ and make an account. Share your account with friends and family to watch your leaderboard grow. There are lots of great prizes to be won, also.

Each student will have set numeracy activities and basic facts to learn. These will be sent home next week, so check your school bags. Lists will be appropriate to their age and level and they will be tested on these at the end of the Math-a-thon on the 25th and/or 26th September.  A certificate will be issued to every student who participates to advise you how many facts your child gets correct on testing day.

Math-a-thon sponsorship contributions can also be made on your myKindo account. www.myKindo.co.nz

CHARITY FUNDRAISING:
Wig Wednesday – 11 September
When kids with cancer go through treatment, they often need to brave the world with no hair. Wig Wednesday is a fun day in September where schools, workplaces and community groups can show their support for these tamariki.

Taking part is easy. Simply wear a wig, style a funky hairdo and wear bright colourful clothes to school on Wednesday 11 September, while raising money for Child Cancer Foundation. Bring a gold coin to your classroom teacher or simply make an instant donation on your myKindo account.

Every dollar we raise will go directly towards supporting Kiwi kids with cancer and their families through the toughest time in their lives.

SPORTS UPDATE:
Cross Country Results
Our annual cross country was held yesterday, on a windy but thankfully fine afternoon. All of the students in Years 3-6 took part, with some Year 5 and 6 students opting to run in the ‘Championship’ race, hoping to secure a place in our Cluster Cross Country team.

We needed to make some last-minute changes to the course due to the threat of rain, but this didn’t dampen spirits, and students participated enthusiastically. It’s in situations like this that we’re incredibly fortunate to have our amazing covered turf to utilise. Thanks to all the whānau who came along to support the event, this is always very much appreciated. Results below:

Touch Rugby Registration
It is time to register for Term 4 Touch Rugby.  Games are played at Kaipatiki Park, Kaipatiki Road, Glenfield, on Wednesday evenings between 4pm and 6:30pm.  The season is Wednesday 23rd October 2024 to Wednesday 11th December 2024. Year 1-6 students are able to register. Estimated cost will be $40 per student and will be loaded onto your MyKindo account for payment before the start of the season. Parents are responsible for transporting their children to and from the venue.

Registration closes Friday 6th September – click here to complete the online form.

Please note we cannot register a team without sufficient numbers or a parent or whānau member who is able to coach and manage the team for each year group. For more information contact the Sports Organiser: Claire Everett, ceverett@sunnybrae.school.nz

Celebrating Success at Sunnybrae

We are proud to share the results from the 2024 West Auckland Performing Arts Competition Strings Section.  Claire, Room 17, won the first prize in the 9 and 10 year old group and was awarded the Anthony Hollows Strings Solo Trophy. Adam,  Room 20, received highly commended and Anthony, Room 13, was awarded third prize in the 7 and 8 year old group. Congratulations to this very musically talented family.

STUDENT RECOUNT:
Music Through the Ages
“Hurry up!” I called to the lingering students. Friday the 23th of August was the final show for our production, Music through the Ages, and Room 20 was set to go last.

All of us were milling about in the many music rooms behind the auditorium, decked out in bright neon hats, ties, necklaces and fishnet glovelettes. Out of the blue, Mrs Richardson called us to the line up and we scrambled to the doorway. As soon as we scampered backstage we were ready for our cue and to perform our dance item. A moment later, Room 18 in their disco esemble, poured into the narrow hallway.

As soon as our cue was spoken, we strode out onto the stage into the flashing lights and fog machine. The music boomed on and we started our dance. There was an ocean of people and even more up in the balcony. My eyes combed through the audience, looking for my dad but I could barely see in the pitch black darkness let alone one person.

Minutes later the music ended and the audience erupted into thunderous applause. We filed back into the hallway and the song “Let’s Dance” blasted out of the speakers. Room 20 ran back out the stage again and took a bow. After we hurriedly walked backwards to the back of the stage, Room 18 sprinted into the spotlight and the other classes followed for the curtain call.

As we walked towards our parents, I knew that I would never forget this experience.
