Welcome to Sunnybrae Normal School!
An inclusive school living our values and maximising the potential of all
He kura mākoha e ū anaki ōna mātāpono, e akiaki ana I ngā tamariki kia eke panuku
At Sunnybrae Normal School, we believe that all children have the right and ability to learn. We have high expectations of every student. Each child is an individual with differing needs, talents and abilities. Children learn at different rates and in different ways, and we acknowledge this by providing a range of activities and settings for learning. On-going assessment informs the planning of programmes.
Students need to know what they are learning, why they are learning it and what they need to learn next. Our focus is on ensuring students understand the process of learning. A variety of effective teaching strategies and approaches are used to achieve success in learning. These include an inquiry-based approach, problem-solving, authentic learning experiences that relate to real-life contexts, cooperative learning, use of learning centres, ability-based individualised and group learning, interactive and hands-on experiences, use of the environment and peer tutoring. We believe we are responsible for offering children the best and most effective strategies to suit their learning needs.
We aim to establish a life-long love of learning that will set all children up for success. We are known for both our academic excellence and the appreciation of the cultural diversity of our school community. We treasure the contribution students and families from different countries bring to our school.
Our ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) class provides specialised support for children who have limited prior learning in English to help them succeed, whatever the level of English they have when they arrive at our school. They will be tutored in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The children will learn English in both a supportive, withdrawn environment, in the classroom for literacy, oral and written language as well as from their peers.
Sunnybrae Normal School welcomes long term and short term (minimum 4 weeks) enrolment applications from International students and their families. Our school is a Signatory to the pastoral-care-code-of-practice-2021-english.pdf
