History

Sunnybrae Normal School opened on 2 February 1966 with a roll of 242 pupils, led by foundation principal Mr Arch Jelley.

As a Normal School it was purpose-built to support the pre-service training of teachers from the North Shore Teachers College. The College, (on the site now occupied by the AUT University) was amalgamated with the Auckland College of Education in 1981. A close and effective partnership continues to exist with the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland.

The Sunnybrae Normal School Crest

This includes the Coat-of-Arms of the North Shore Teachers College and the ‘sun’, which is the emblem of the School.

The Teachers College Crest: A seahorse with a quill pen all on a wreath. The seahorse represents the maritime suburb location and the quill pen represents learning. The wreath separates the Crest from the Shield.
The Shield: The left half is the reduced Teachers College Shield of our Telstar satellites; the Telstars signify the date of the founding of the College which was in the same year as the launching of the Telstar communication satellites. The right half is the sun, the Sunnybrae emblem. Black, white and yellow are the school colours.
